- Q:I want to replace my wood flooring with porcelain wood like tile because i have a dog but my uncle who is a contractor said because of the house not sitting on concrete foundation ( meaning you can go under the house) i can only install vinyl or wood flooring again because tile is too heavy but um we have tile in the kitchen and restrooms and my other uncle who has a two story home has tile upstairs so i dont get it

- Q:I‘m getting some of my house tiled and would like to know if I am getting ripped off or not. It is going to be approximalte 600 sq ft with 2 upstairs bathrooms. The installer gave me a quote of $2400 to lay the tile (straight or diagonal, whichever I want). I will have to buy the tile and other materials on my own. The tile is going to be 18x18. The price includes ripping out the carpet and ripping out the tile that is already in the kitchen that will be replaced as well as the tile in the upstairs baths. Also included will be haul away of all the trash. Is this a good price or not?
- A porcelain tile is decorative and glazed only on the outside. If you were to see a cross section, you would find only a small decorative veneer sorta surface on the exposed side. The rest of the tile has a dirt colour. In a ceramic tile, the colour is uniform throughout the tile. Practically, say if a prcelain tile gets chipped, you will see the dirt colour where it's chipped. In a ceramic one, it would not be such a stark difference. By the way, many mugs and cups we use for beverages, are made of ceramic. The not so personal stuff like vases could be made of porcelain. Got it ?

- Its much better too remove the old tile, tile requires a special backing board that the mortar adheres to, you would have to put it over the exisitng tile and it would bring your surfaces out another 1/2-1 or so. I would go to Home Depot or book store and buy a book on DIY tile. You will need to rent a wet saw to cut the tiles. You use mortar to adhere the tile, little plastic spacers in between the tile, then you finish off with grout. If you have never laid tile, I would try find a friend/family member who has, or get an estimate from a professional. It is a very labor intensive job, and you need to be meticulous. If anything is off you can get water problems cause cracking, mold, mildew, etc.
- Q:Is it hard to fit tile around the toilet? Should I start there first?
- I answered 2 peel and stick tile Q's just today, I wouldn't use it or advise it, but obviously it sells. Cathy has the best first answer, take up the toilet. Without knowing what the old floor is, or the substrate and not knowing how long you plan to occupy the house, IF I was to do the job, I'd use contact cement on the existing floor and back olf the peel and stick. - Q:why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?
- Water proofing is done before any tile is set into place.. Water proofing must be done on any horizontal surface in water prone areas such as showers. Not always done out side the shower area, but each case is different. You should allow the bonding material to dry before grouting so the bonding agent, mastic (walls in a non wet area )or a thin set won t bleed through and stain the grout. The only way to ensure of a good bond is to lift tiles during the setting process and make sure you have proper amount of mastic ( walls in a non wet area) or thin set under the tiles.. There are ways to check floor tiles to ensure a bond is to knock on the tiles to see if they sound solid. Hollow sound gives way to a no bond. And NEVER bond to just a green board in a shower or high moisture area. Failure will soon follow if you do. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q:I live in a single-level ranch style house but on a concrete pad. I am re-tiling the kitchen floor. Upon removing the old tile, I discovered a 15 lb. felt pad had been glued to the floor; on top of this pad was thin set; then the tile. I live in Bakersfield, CA which is a dry and arrid climate.
- No vapor barrier required but clean the cement floor and seal it. If not level use thin-set to level out. Don't forget to seal your grout and tiles if directed by the manufacturer. This has to be done annually. Avoid harsh detergents as they will yellow your tile and follow manufacturer's directions on cleaning.
- Q:I‘m thinking about most economical way to up grade my living and master bedroom flooring.both had laminate and had flood slab leak due to underground water pipe damage. now the pluming has fixed and everything has been taken care of. the rest of the house already got white tiles throughout. I can go laminate in the living room and tile in the bedroom. both rooms are about 280 sq.ft. or I can do the need room laminate again. I don‘t know how to put the flooring, so I would Gabe to hire someone to do it. we have a Lowes home center where their contractor can come out and to the installation. they want $35 for an estimate. we also have a floor center just down the street from us. their material was little more expensive than the Lowes price but perhaps the installation may be cheaper... I‘m not sure. would tile thought the house including the bedroom better, cheaper than laminate in the bedroom? I know I would want laminate in the living room hopefully nothing gets wet.
- On average , and it can vary, labor for tile ( ceramic) is almost double that of laminate.. Plus tile you have the extras for thin set and grout. Not much but it all adds up. On the plus side. tile, and I assume you mean ceramic tile will out last laminate. Get prices both ways or have them break down each room individually.
