- Q: How many tiles measuring 450mm x 450mm do i nedd to cover an area of 6m x 2m?
- As has been said you need 60 tiles, however if there is cutting involved the experts advise adding a 10% breakage allowance so consider buying another 6 as spares.

- I have used a long-handled ice scraper that was sharpened. It didn't necessarily make the job easier, but at least I could stand up! It also gives you better leverage. OH, and wear gloves to protect uour hands.

- You should put the floor in the room before you put any of the appliances in and for in the bathroom put the tile in the whole room then put the vanities in after that way if you sell the house or want to change out the vanities you won't have to change thew tile

- ceramic tile? Get a grout file and file out the grout from around the tile which is loose. Get a hammer and break up the tile which is loose if it won't come up after the grout is gone. Chisel down the existing thin set to the subfloor material. Apply new thin set, set new tile and re-grout after 24 hours. edit.. after finding out that you do not have another tile to replace it the procedure will be the same except hitting it with a hammer. It may come right up or you may have to gently pry it up. Gently and do not pry against an adjacent tile.
- Q: what causes lippage on a granite floor? i had someone install granite tiles in my bedroom and the lippage isn‘t too bad i must say but 2 or 3 tiles do have A LOT of lippage...was wondering why that would be? thanks so much in advance!
- Hey BigBadShawn, I worked for years in flooring at The Home Depot and I got to see this question come up quite a bit from my customers. Natural stone tiles like granite can be tricky to keep, and lippage can come from various sources. Depending on what is underneath it as well as how the tiles are installed will determine what is the exact cause of the lippage. Usually I've seen with older houses with wood subfloors that prep work wasn't addressed so that over time as the floor joists/subfloor expands, contracts, and settles tiles of any substrate can pop up or create small lippages. The professional way to installed your floor was (hopefully) by the builder using a tile backerboard and/or securing the subfloor securely before laying down the tiles. Also, if the tiles have very thin to no grout lines, it is possible that the events of the floor joists settling makes little room for the tiles to go anywhere but up. With a high-quality flexible mortar, that shouldn't of been an issue. If you noticed a progression over time with your tiles, I'd say you most likely have a wood subfloor on your hands. If it was concrete, it could be a matter of improper installation, moisture, or unevenness of the surface itself that gave it the lippage you see now. Hope this helps you out, aboveaveragejoe
- Q: i have a tile back splash that runs all along my counter including behind my sink and behind my stove. it is a small 1 tile, and i‘m pretty sure it‘s original to the house (40‘s) so it‘s getting kinda grimy. no matter what i do to clean it, it‘s so tough, because of kitchen grease and splatter. the grout isn‘t sealed so it absorbs stains. i keep seeing people say sprinkle baking soda on tile, let it sit, and then clean with vinegar, which would be great if this was a floor, but its a wall, so if there are any solutions, that would be great. natural preferred. i really don‘t want to replace this. painting it is an option, so suggestions on paint for tile would be appreciated as well.
- Is it practical to remove some of the grout,apply new grout and apply a sealant before using the area? The other suggestions given may clean the grout ,but the problem will keep recurring.

- Q: There was actually only a tub there and no shower, so the walls are all plaster. I know that before I tile I need a different backerboard, meaning the plaster goes at least to a point. Any hints, tips, directions, and suggestions on how to do the job?
- You dont necessarily need to remove the plaster, but i would recommend removing it. cut the plaster out to half inch short of where you are going to tile to, so that the tile will lap onto the plaster a little. this will get rid of any patching, painting, ect. In the place of the removed plaster, install half inch cement fiberboard, costs around $10 per 3ftX5ft sheet. install with screws every 8 inches on each stud. use mesh tape in joints of fiberboard and float the joints with thinset. i would also recommend using a sealer that is specifically designed for cement fiber board under tile in the shower. dont remember the name off hand, but you can roll or brush it on and it turns bright red when it is dry. then use ceramic tile adhesive to set the tile on the walls. be sure to seal the grout joints in the tile after the grout has set for 3 or 4 days. 2 coats of sealer recommended. you can tell the sealer is working if you put a drop of water on the grout joint after the sealer has had at least 24 hours to dry, if the drop of water stays in a small bead shape then the sealer is doing its job, if the water drop soaks into the grout and darkens it, then the grout needs another coat of sealer. dont know if you are tileing the floor of the shower or using a shower pan , but that is a whole nother issue. any questions email me
- Q: in my bathroom what do i need thats easy an inexpensive? Can i do it myself.? trying to do it for my mother this weekend while she is away. Have tile thats old and seperating can i just pull it up clean the floor and lay the tile?
- If it's a bathroom floor and you want something not too expensive, i would go for some 12 x 12 ceramic tile. Just make sure it's not too smooth or shiny. It is a bathroom you wouldn't want your mother to slip. So go for some tile with a textured surface. Another important thing to consider is what kind of surface your'e laying the tile onto. If it's concrete there might not be any problems. If it's a wood surface, you better get some backer board such as hardibacker or wonderboard. Trust me. You do not want to lay tile straight to tha wood. I always ens uplifting and you get a big mess. ~Good luck!~

- I would go for a mix, either through the very small tiles, or through a stone that combines tones from all of the above. Given that you have white cabinets and a lot of light greys you don't want to go too dark, but adding some of the burgandy and various shades of gray and beiges would look nice. I like the smaller tiles, not just because they are easier to install, but because there is a lot of variety out there so that you can mix and match easily. They may cost a bit more than something you pick up off the shelf, but in the end it is not that much considering an overall kitch remodel.
