- Q: want to tile counter top with out using hardboard
- It can and will hold up on one condition w/o a backer board. The top must be 2 3/4 ply wood or nova ply( HDF) , not the single layer counter top with the false edge that makes it look like its 1 1/2 thick. Other wise you need a backer board so the tile meets tile codes( ATC and TCA guide lines) for a minimum substrate which is 1 1/4 A few special thing need to be done but it will work. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications GL
- Q: This is what I need some information on. I decided to put some floor tile in front of my door in my living room where some carpet is. So what size should I cut out of the carpet where I‘m going to put the tile ? If you have any advice how I should go about this just let me know. You no something like the dos as well as the don‘ts
- Cut your carpet and pad smaller that the area where you are laying the tile. If at all possible, I'd roll both the carpet and pad back in one piece without cutting them until the tile work was completely done. Then install your carpet tack strip about 3/8 inch away from the tile. Cut the pad along the outer edge of the tack strip. Then cut the carpet to go over the tack strip about 1/4 to 3/8 inch longer than the edge of the tile. With a stiff blade putty knife tuck the carpet securely between the tack strip and the tile. That's the best help I can give you without doing it for you. Good Luck and don't try to rush things. Remember, the tile thin set and grout must be completely dry or they will move on you.
- Q: What does the thinset and grout do to tiles when installing them?
- The thin set ( either a grey is what adheres the tile to the substrate your bonding to.It is also used as a filler when setting a cement board down to the floor. This ensures there is no voids between the sub floor and the cement board to make a solid base for tile. The grout is to fill the space between the tiles to help support the tile and to prevent dirt between the needed space for tiles. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: I‘m going to install a porcelain tile floor. My question is when I install a tile up against a cabinet that people can see. Should I but the tile up against the cabinet or should I leave enough space to grout between the tile and the cabinet. Just wondering what the standard practice is , and what looks the best. Also I have a small crack in the concrete, which the tile company said it was so minor that not to worry about it. Although it caused a crack in my old tile that was originally installed. I would really like to prep the crack prior to installing the new tile. What would you recommend doing to prep the crack. Thanks
- If at all possible remove the cabinet and tile under it this way you will have a new clean and level floor otherwise you are leaving a quarter inch drop off at the least for water, bacteria and mold to grow. As for the crack if you have a circular saw buy an in-expensive carborundum blade or mmasonryfor it then grove out the crack and use a hand chisel wherever you can't reach or use a hammer and mmasonrygouging chisel for the whole crack, diamond wheels on grinders work well also if you have one, then wire wheel or wire brush out the grove and vvacuumit thoroughly then put silicone in it to just below level then using your thin set mix enough to apply a thin layer to each side of the crack and level out the crack then use fiberglass drywall tape and possibly a geo grid type netting or vvinylscreening, if the slab is older and somewhat settled this is the only way without busting out the slab which is probably only 3 inch thick, and pouring a new 6 bag per yard high strength concreteon a vvibratortamped ssubstrate withvapor barriers.
- Q: I want to rip up the old linoleum in my bathroom and install some tile. The previous owners laid the current layer of linoleum on top of the original linoleum. From the little bit I‘ve peeled up to look underneath it looks like chip board underneath that. Does that mean I need to lay some kind of backerboard underneath the tile? I also plan on tearing out the curent cabinets and installing new ones. Should I install the tile or the cabinets first?
- Ceramic Tile Backerboards There are many types of backerboard products suitable for use with ceramic tile. We will focus on two of the more popular products: 1/2 thick, water resistant greenboard sheetrock and cementitious type ceramic tile backerboards (recommended). Subfloors We recommend that 1/4 or 1/2 thick cementitious ceramic tile backerboards be installed as an underlayment over wood subfloors. The exterior grade plywood should be at least 1-1/8 thick (5/8 minimum) in order to provide for a structurally solid, movement free foundation. In addition, the space between the joists should not exceed 16 on center. In any case, the maximum allowable concentrated deflection of your subfloor may not exceed L/360 of the span. Install backerboard using a non-modified thinset mortar and 1-1/4 screws or nails. The diy network website is a great place to go to find information about any home improvement projects....good luck!
- Q: Classification of tiles?
- 5, ceramic tiles: also known as mosaic, specifications, thin and small, hard texture, acid, alkali, wear, no water, strong pressure, not broken, colorful and versatile. 6, quintana brick: This is a glazed porcelain tiles, a very good anti-skid and wear resistance. Generally speaking, "anti-skid tiles" are mostly quintana bricks. As this kind of brick price is moderate, popular consumer favorite.
- Q: tiles to be applied in tub surround and ceiling
- Thinset. okorder /
- Q: We had a piping problem in out house and we need to find self stick tiles. We honestly cant find any good places to find these tiles. If anyone can give good suggestions on where to find some self stick tiles? I live in dearborn Michagan.
- Do you have a Lowes in your area?
- Q: Over time the tiles in my apartment bathtub have turned yellow. It‘s not all of the tiles, just a few in the back/corner. I undoubtedly have hard water but I can‘t figure out why a few of these tiles are yellow. As far as I can tell, these are cheap plastic tiles (white). I have tried comet (with bleach), full strength bleach, vinegar/water solution, vinegar/baking soda, baking soda by itself, mr. clean magic eraser, and full strength CLR to no avail. The only thing that worked at all was using comet and scouring the tiles with steel wool. Although it scratched the surface, the actual scratch part wasn‘t noticeable. But there has to be an easier way than breaking my arm to get one tile cleaned. Any suggestions? If anyone wants I can email them a picture of the tiles.
- Anything you've used that has already scratched the tiles will only result in hard water deposits clinging to them again, as the glaze has been compromised. CLR full strength is really the only thing that works that won't damage the tiles although it requires repeated treatments to clean them. Take an extra fine media abrasive (0000), mix a 50/50 solution of a product called Barkeeper's Friend and CLR and try this. You may have to treat it several times but the hard water scale should dissolve without damaging the tiles. I've heard of mixing a solution of scratchless cleaning powder and kerosene, but you don't want to apply that to plastic and you don't want to use VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in confined spaces. A better solution would be to break out all the plastic tile and have it replaced with ceramics, but since you're renting and your landlord probably doesn't want to spend money on remodeling this is your best bet.
- Q: Can anyone tell me what type of tile this is? Name?
- All i will say is: its normally not a best thought to put it correct on top. It turns into extra seemingly for it to come up. After which the approach of taking over a layer of laminate and a layer of ceramic tile could be that a lot tougher when it happened. I consider the one technique to make that work with out taking up the ceramic tile is to make an air tight seal between the two. I couldn't give you any strategies on how to try this though.
