It reduced your traction (the wheel may even bounce off the road in extreme cases), and causes premature wear on your steering, suspension and wheel bearings. And it's not expensive to fix - any garage or tyre place can do it quickly and cheaply.

You can drive as fast as you want really. There isn't a limitiation between 4wd and 2wd. Just not smart to go 80 if you actually need 4wd as it will be slippery. 4wd does not take the place of brains. the 40 mph you read is only for 4wd lo range. 4wd hi range is fine for normal speeds.
