- Q:Basically I have a 3000watt amp, and I need to buy the right wires. Would I still manage to get the full power out of the amplifier with 1000w speaker wiring kit or do I need to buy a 3000w speaker wiring kit?If so, where is the difference with the higher wattage wiring kits.Thanks
- 3000w amps are rare and expensive. Is that peak power or rms? Can you provide the brand/model? If it's ACTUALLY 3000w rms you need a high output electrical system with a custom alternator and probably a 2nd battery, and at a MINIMUM you need a GOOD quality 1/0 awg wiring kit. On the other hand - if this is 3000w peak the actual power (rms) could be as low as a few hundred watts. Amps this size will run w/o a problem with most stock electrical systems. A good 4 awg wiring kit would probably be more than adequate. Many lower level brands use bogus peak ratings to make their equipment appear to be more powerful than it actually is. Wiring is based simply on the thickness of the copper. Some of the cheap brands are less than honest about the size of their wiring. They get around advertising regulations by only using the word gage or gauge, not the wire standard AWG. If the wire you use is too small it will have excessive voltage drop so the amp will not be able to produce the power it would otherwise. More importantly, in extreme cases if the wire isn't fused properly it can get hot, melt the insulation off and become a fire hazard.

- Electrocution happens when electricity finds a way to ground. Squirrels are not grounded so they don't get shocked. Ever watch the Discovery channel? They've shown how the power company works on high voltage lines without shutting the power off. A helicopter hovers next to the power line while a technician reaches out to the power line with a probe. Once contacted the helicopter and the technician are at the same potential voltage so nobody gets shocked. However, during approach they are NOT at the same potential. That's the reason for making contact with he wire with a probe first. So that the technician doesn't take a big hit when he first touches the live wire. So squirrels, birds, rats - anything that can land on the wires doesn't get electrocuted. But if an animal touches the wire AND ground (or another wire), it's all over in a blinding flash. - Q:I bought a single pole dimmer switch to install in my dining room and when I took the old switch out nothing looked right. There are two wires which were joined together by another single wire which was attached to the top screw. There was another single wire (I believe the ground wire) attached to the bottom screw. I disconnected the first two wires and attached them separately to the black wires on the dimmer and attached the ground wires together. It didn't work. - I am assuming the wires your talking about are the cords for appliances, lamps or what have you. And the type that you have to plug into your wall. You can as another post mentioned wrap the wire with black electrical tape if both side of the wire arn't touching. Or you can go to your local ACE hardware store and a floor associate would be more than happy to show you the items available for repairing or replacing the chewed wires. One of my cats started doing the same thing so I gathered the excess wire and tied it into a small bundle with a wire tie and the cat quit chewing them.

Could this little light be drawing enough power to run the battery dead over night? Should he just get a wiring harness and hook wires up like that?
- If the stereo runs even with the ignition turned off, then you have wired a continuous power supply to the radio instead of an accessory, and that will drain his battery. I always recommend using a wiring harness when installing an aftermarket stereo, as there is no way you can accidentally wire something wrong.
