- Q:i know NOTHING about how to do it or what i need. Could someone just list all the tools and equipment i would need to buy or rent to complete this job myself? ie, tiles, tile cutter, ?, ?, ?... etc. thanks.
- You'd probably need a tile cutter, wet-saw would be best if the job is medium or larger. Otherwise a manual tile cutter would work, just more labor intensive. Wet-saws can be bought at discount stores for as little as 20 bucks. Some tile nippers will help remove small bits of tile or small cuts, etc. Your prep work will call for maybe snap line to mark straight lines for tile placement. Using a stright-edge will also help keep your tile straight, and using the plastic grout inserts will ensure you keep a uniform thickness between your tiles (size of inserts depends on how wide your grout lines will be). You'll need a float or trowel to spread the mortar or mastic. Once it's spread, you set your tile one it while mortar is wet. You'll need a water bucket with large sponge to wipe down the tiles after they've been set. This not only cleans the tiles, but levels the grout to a final depth as well. Wipe it while wet and it's fairly easy - let it dry and it's almost impossible to smooth your grout. I suggest you search the web or get a book on tiling basics. The job is really straight-forward and fairly simple. Just familiarize yourself with the basic concepts and tips for doing the job. Tiling is far easier than most folks believe it to be. It's just a matter of rolling up one's sleeves and begining the job. Finally, you'll need six-pack of beer when the job is finished. Good luck
- Q:Can I paint over the tiles? If so what kind of products would I use and how would I prep the tiles?
- i wouldn't paint them . . .I used to have this shower remodel job for a college, we'd have to paint over the old shower tiles with the above mentioned 2-part epoxy paint...and it sucked. not only was it a hassle to sand those tiles, but to mix the paint and get it smooth and even...it's just very frustrating and i wouldn't wish it on my enemies. if the tiles are REAL BAD, then save up and just do a bathroom remodel...if not, then use other colors to accent the bathroom. blue and yellow go well togther, also blue and orange...or you could get a rich brown to go with it, it really depends on the blue and how bad it is. hope this helps good luck
- Q:I moved into new construction 2 yrs ago. Someone did a crappy job at laying floor tiles down and now some of them have come loose. Does the whole floor need to come up and redone?
- I had this happen this year. they had to come and remove them and relay. IT was $2.00 per tile
- Q:What kind of tiles good? How to look?
- Personal feeling Huapeng tiles good, good quality. A good tile to see a variety of, for example: 1, hardness 2, water absorption 3, wear resistance 4, acid and alkali resistance
- Q:my boss wants to remove floor tiles and stain the cement floor underneath the tile, what is a easy way to remove the old tile
- It's according to your budget, the size of your arms and the shape your back is in. A 2 1/2 wide masons chisel and a 4 lb hammer will get it done about as fast as you can do it, if your body is up to it. If you have an air compressor you can buy an air chisel at Big Lots, Walmart, etc., for around 20 bucks and that will get the job done, along with the first answer for the real stubborn places as easy as you are going to do it. It will take at least a 2 or 3 hp compressor. Check the cubic feet per minute on both it and the chisel. I have done it using both when the compressor really wasn't large enough. When it runs low on air, grab the hammer and let the pressure build up. One last bit of info. Get you a little creeper seat or build you one that keeps your tail about 8 to 12 inches above the floor. You DO NOT WANT TO BE DOING IT ON YOUR KNEES. If you are a young buck like I used to be, when you get to be an old man like I am now, you will pay for it. Trust me, I am on disability now because of what I used to think was OK to do. Your body only has so many miles for it. Keep the speed down, if you know what I mean. Save something for the good times. And yes, mastic is glue. Good to put down but the worst to get back up.
- Q:i need to cut a hole in ceramic floor tile. i have tried many things such as dremel with different ceramic tile cutting attachments and a carbide hole saw.what should i try next?
- Grinds that carbide right off the bit, doesn't it? One of the previous posts has one technique, that being, drill a small hole in the tile (carbide, diamond-tip) at a slow speed with some sort of lubricant such as water (also cools the bit, but don't electrocute yourself) on the tile. Then you would thread the carbide grit hacksaw blade through the hole and hook up a hacksaw frame and cut away - - slowly. Then the tile will usually break when you are almost done. There are tile hole saw blades made, but they are not cheap, as they wear out relatively quickly. They will work up to a few inch diameter size. If it's any bigger than that, you'll probably want to find someone with a water-jet machine, like a countertop fabricator - person. A water-jet cuts just like it sounds - with water. It'll cut stone up to several inches thick. Hope that helps
- Q:Can I also use thin set to grout my tiles on counter? I‘m using white glazed ceramic tiles 4x4. If not what should I use? Please help
- The most popular tiles are large format styles that minimize grout lines and make a small kitchen appear larger. Squares are the most popular shape, but rectangles, hexagons, and octagons can make a statement. You can incorporate one or more styles to create a variety of patterns, from checkerboard to basketweave, and add accents for visual interest. The hardness that makes tile so desirable as a kitchen floor surface can also be a drawback. Serious cooks will want to wear comfortable shoes or put down floor mats or area rugs, because standing on tile for long periods of time can be tough on legs and backs. Its surface is cold to the touch of bare feet. And dropped dishes, mugs, and glasses can break on impact.
- Q:Home selection tiles, which brand to choose that good?
- Co-ceramic, my home is their brick. They are completely impermeable technology is very good, even the tiles of the master said that the quality is really good. Paved out after the whole atmosphere is very impressive. Recently also out of the ecological negative oxygen ion brick, can release negative ions, I intend to knock out the kitchen for this brick, and now nothing more important than health
- Q:Steno Tiles how Steno is a few lines of brand
- 5 listen to the sound With a hard object (such as carrying the key) flick, the sound more crisp, the higher the degree of porcelain, the better the quality. You can also use the fingers to clamp the corner of the tile, so that the tiles hanging down, with the other hand flick the lower tiles, the more clear the sound, the better the quality. This method may be more virtual, we should listen to a few pieces of different price tiles in order to have the ability to accurately determine. 6 to see the water absorption In the back of the tiles, watching the water spread after the speed of water, in general, the slower the water, indicating that the greater the density of tiles, the better the quality. Tiles should not absorb water, if the tiles to absorb water, and from the front to see the water stains, that shows the quality is poor, do not buy. Wall is a certain degree of water absorption, it is difficult to use this method to test, but now the wall and floor tiles are basically supporting the sale of tiles qualified, wall is also no big problem. Poor quality of the tiles on the back of a larger water absorption
- Q:1. Why floor tiles can pop up?2. What we can do to avoid that?
- You didn't mention what type of tiles (ceramic, vinyl, etc.) Vinyl pop up because the glue did not adhere properly, applies to both spread mastic and self adhesive. Surface prep is usually where the mistake is made. If the fault is that of the adhesive, the manufacturer often will make some amends. Ceramic usually pops up because the floor is uneven, or the tile was not seated correctly in the quick set. If some effort of was expended for surface prep, this is not the usual cause (this type of flooring has some degree of forgiveness related to surface prep). Future avoidance requires clean working conditions and following all instructions of the manufacturers of whose products you are using. (quick and easy cheat to repair=liquid nails, to glue tile down in place-hopefully before you applied grout!)
