Better go to Advance Auto Parts store and have your car scanned for problems, and then code(s) erased. Disconnect the battery will also erase the code and make the check engine light off. But you don't get the code(s). Most often the light on indicates something wrong in the engine/emission control system. If they did not pass your car's emission test, they should give you a test result indicating the code(s) or reason. If the light were on for no reason, I am afraid you might have a malfunctional ECM (engine computer). Immediately after you have erased the code(s), you can not pass the emission test if it is 96 or later model. You need to drive it for some miles, say about 100 miles and then your car's emission control system will be READY for test. If the malfunction is caused by an oxigen sensor, most often, after about 20 miles, and before your car is ready for retest, the check engine light will be on again; if it is catalyst converter efficiency below threshold, also quite a lot, you can drive a few hundred miles before the light comes back. In My opinion sounds like a Heater Core is out ( Basically a small Radiator like piece that gets Plugged up) Usually found on the Passenger side with Two medium sized rubber hoses going into it. Quite easy to change. If that's not the problem could be as simple as the thermostat, i always check the small simple things first because this is the best way to trouble shoot. Nine times out of ten its always the the small simple cheap things.

Q:My ABS light is on constantly and the emergency brake light comes on every so often but does not stay on constantly. I scanned the code at Advanced Auto which came up as C1276 left front release valve solenoid malfunction. Does anyone have any clue what may be causing this? Thanks!

Conditions for Setting the DTC C1276 One of the following conditions exists: The EBCM detects that delivered torque signal is out of the valid range. The EBCM does not receive the delivered torque signal The following conditions can cause this concern: An open in the delivered torque circuit. An short to ground or voltage in the delivered torque circuit. A wiring problem, terminal corrosion, or poor connection in the delivered torque circuit. A communication frequency problem. A communication duty cycle problem. The EBCM is not receiving information from the PCM. Loose or corroded EBCM ground or PCM ground.
Q:There is nothing in any manual about these two options in the MMI setup and while I have read elsewhere that the "Touring Mode" has to do with where the headlights point I was hoping someone might know... I believe the "Auto Running Lights" feature have to do with the sensitivity of the full lighting system coming on but am not sure...

It's the charcoal canister, the vent valve, or any of the hoses running to them. It can also be just a loose or defective fuel cap. Buy a new cap and drive it for a week and see if the light goes off. If this doesn't solve the problem you will need to take it to the dealer. The EVAP system is more complicated than most people are prepared to handle themselves. The good news is the you should be able to drive the vehicle until you can get it fixed.

Many problems can cause the check engine light to come on. The white smoke from the exhaust may be due to a problem with the engine management system, or coolant leaking into the cylinders (the last problem would be very expensive to fix). It may or may not be related to the check engine light. Try going to an auto parts store which, for free, may hook your car up to an analyzer that can display the diagnostic codes. That would tell you why the light is coming on. Note: the comment in another answer to this question stating that only a mechanic with special equipment can detect engine faults on a BMW is wrong. Any scanner can read and display basic OBD II codes. A local Autozone did that for my 2004 745li for free, and stores of that kind can often find why the check engine light is on by doing so. BMW dealers and indie shops have equipment that reads the proprietary codes, but the expense of doing that may be unnecessary.
