Q:Fuel gauge was not registering and diagnostic could not find problem but mechanic installed the ELD sensor and this seemed to solve the problem with the fuel gauge although mechanic did not think there was anything wrong with fuel gauge. That problem was in February. This month I brought the car to dealer because of engine light. I was told to bring in car early in morning (6Am) because it will require more diagnostic work to determine why engine light stays on. They mentioned emission problem. I passed NY emissions Inspection a few weeks ago.

The malfuntion indicator lamp (MIL) is controlled by an on-board diagnostic system that checks the integrity of the emissions control system and its individual components to ensure that the vehicle is running in compliance with federal test standards. If the system detects a problem with any monitored system or component on two consecutive test cycles (in most cases) the check engine light will be turned ON. There are over 160 conditions that are tested that could cause the light to be turned on. in most cases a dealer or auto parts store can simply check for the code and tell you if it is a minor problem such as a loose gas cap or if it is something that will require a more extensive diagnosis. Without knowing the fault code, it is impossible to speculate on whether it is a new problem or related to a previous one. However, I'd recommend taking it to the dealer as there are still some items that are covered under the emissions warranty (most items are no longer covered but the expensive ones are). hope that helps

Q:I have a store bought diagnostic machine that the guys who work in the shop and sold it to me said it really does work, which I tend to believe since them saying so could result in them losing money. Anyhow, I have a small emissions system leak, did the gas cap, reset the light, it cam back on. So, I am calling around to see who can fix it for the least amount of money. My local dealership said they would have to still run a diagnostics test running me $100 more dollars even though i can tell them what the problem is. They said their diagnostic will tell them precisely where the leak is, which sounds a little fishy to me, i don‘t think that machine would tell them that, wouldn‘t it be a visual or some other type of inspection other than the diagnostic machine. also, regardless of the diagnostics, how much should this run me so i know who is trying to steal from me and who is being more honest? This is not covered under my extended warrenty.

This is a generally easy question to answer. The leak could be anywhere in your exhaust system. From the exhaust headers on the front/side of the engine, all the way back to the muffler. Generally, though, these leaks tend to be around the O2 (oxygen) sensors. Most cars have 2. Some could have 1-3 of them. Go to an exhaust specialist and ask them if they could help you find the leak. Otherwise, if it is not the exhaust, it could be a vacuum leak in the engine bay. Most engines now have rubber hoses that are all over the engine that allow air to be pulled through various areas of the engine. If you can do it yourself, check all the hoses and see if you can find one that is detached. A good source of reference would be a Hanes auto manual which you can pick up from Auto Zone. 1st ,its not normal for the pilot to be acting that way.if its a new one and sears installed it they should come out and replace it,no questions ask.i have friends that work for sears(i live in AL.) and from some of the things they tell me,they change stuff out for alot less than that,especially if its gonna take that long to get parts

It's a malfunction on the Engine Emission System just plug in the computer, free at some auto part, and get where the problem is. Could be problem for the stalls or not the main task for Check Engine Light it's Emission

Q:2000 Pontiac grand am 2.4 automaticbattery light came on while driving. took battery and alt to Autozone. alt tested good. battery tester not working. warrantied battery anyway. so, good alt and new battery. checked for loose/bad connection. all seem fine.when I start car in the morning I can drive 10 min the the battery light comes on. I can accelerate 1500+ rpms and light goes off but back yo idle the battery light comes back on.too car to orilleys auto and had them test on car. battery good. alt diodes good. receiving low voltage at 11.78. was told alt bad???? was it a bad bench test or is could there be something else???

Sounds like the alternator is charging but not enough, you need 13.5 to 15 volts at the battery when the engine is running to keep everything going. Change the alternator and you should have solved the problem.
