- I am not up to date with the new canister models, but have always liked the quality and quietness of the Electrolux models. If you get something like a Hoover upright, you can also buy one of those extra long extra flexible extension hoses and have the advantages of both a canister and an upright in one.

- hmmm, That's curious. My dog doesn't mind the vacuum cleaner, but it drives one of my birds up the wall. I wouldn't react and yell at the dog to be quiet (which is EVERYBODY'S first reaction. It gets so annoying!) If you can just ignore the barking and try to reassure the dog it might help. I do this with my bird and he usually does stop freaking out. Now, if only you have a 'birddog' Hahahahah! er, it really wasn't that funny, was it? Okay, I'll go away now.

I second the bathroom hand dryer thing. Also the automatic toilets still bother my kids. Another thing that helped was letting my children vacuum. I didn't turn it on the first few times, but then they started pushing the button when they were ready. You don't say how old he is, but if he is old enough to try to help, let him. Or just carry him while you are vacuuming. Good luck...They generally outgrow it.

- if you change the filter and bag frequent enough you shouldn't have a vacuum stop working because of pet hair however it does strain the parts and sometimes make its lifespan shorter, however what I would recomend and what my aunt uses (she has at minimum 16 dogs in her house at a time, she breeds them) she has a dyson and she SWEARS by it, she use to have to buy a new vac almost every 2 or so months which is alot!!
