Is it best to go for a more powerful vacuum cleaner?
The power of a vacuum cleaner’s motor is measured in Watts. The higher the Wattage the better it will clean, as long as the machine is well designed with good air flow and suction power too. However, the higher the wattage, the noisier the machine will be. With upright vacuum cleaners. you don’t need to have so much wattage or suction power as you do with a cylinder cleaner as the dirt has less distance to travel before it reaches the bag or dust container. The type of brushes are more of an important consideration with uprights than the power. You don’t always want to have a vacuum cleaner operating at full power for example, when cleaning upholstery or curtains, so it’s useful to be able to adjust the power level yourself.
Which attachments should I look out for?
Most vacuum cleaners come with three attachments, a crevice tool, upholstery and dusting brushes and a small head which is best for vacuuming stairs. You can also get additional turbo brushes which have their own motor for extra suction which are useful for cleaning deep-pile carpets or a power cleaning head which has electrically powered rotating brushes. A hard-floor or parquet brush is useful for wooden or tiled floors. Some cleaners have extendable tubes which are useful for hard to reach areas like cobwebs in the corners of ceilings.

Look for a cleaner with a large cleaning head – this will help cut down the amount of time it takes to vacuum a room. - The Dyson is a real powerhouse but for the $400 price tag it had better be. I've never used a more user-friendly machine and the thing gets the job DONE. The other nice thing about the Dyson is that you don't have to bother with filters. I'm also a huge fan of my Dirt Devil. It doesn't seem to clog, it works fast and thouroghly, and the manuverability is way better than the Dyson. The downsides to the Dirt Devil include the filter. It makes emptying the canister really annoying because you have to pull the dirty thing out of the canister, shake it off which invariably makes for a huge dust cloud, and you have to replace them every few months. In addition, on my model, the attachments aren't positioned well. They're always falling out while I'm vacuming and the attachment hose tends to get tangled in the cord and come loose. For more manuverability, Swiffer now makes a vaccuum cleaner which is really effective for small jobs and low pyle carpeting. It's really lightweight and versatile, but it's not very powerful. Then there's always a central vac system, in which a professionally installed unit in the basement is connected to holes positioned all over the house. When you want to vacuum, you plug a sweeper via hose into the holes in the wall. You don't have to worry about an electric cord or changing the bag. The downside is that you could buy a car for the amount of money you'd spend on it and it's not THAT much more convenient. If money were no object, I'd personally buy the Dyson.

- the fan causes the vacuum cleaner to suck-in the air. as the moving air passes by the dirt particles, it's the INTERACTION of the moving air and the dirt that causes the dirt to be drawn along with the air. basically, the air molecules bash into the dirt particle and impart energy (momentum) to the dirt, and this is what makes it move. if there was no air motion over the dirt, then the dirt particles would not respond to the vacuum cleaner.

- im a front desk worker and I have done this work for 11 years and in all that time I have NEVER heard of a manager and/or owner asking or telling their housekeepers they had to buy their own vacuums. I do not think it is illegal but not ethical. the last hotel I worked for our housekeepers used orbit vacuum cleaners and those are household vacuum cleaners. our maintenance man cleaned them once a month. they lasted forever.. maybe that hotel needs to do that also.
