- Q: In my home, we have polished tiles. My kid has fall-down most of the time. Can anyone help me to remove polish from ceramic tiles?
- You do not want to do this for two reasons. One is that it will take away all the protection from the tile that allows the tile itself to be water proof and stain proof. Take away the glaze and the tile will stain. The second reason is that the glaze provides most of the tile body strength. A couple of things to help prevent tiles from being slick.. Remove all wet shoes and keep the floor dry. Hard with kids I know. Anti slip area rugs helps. And lastly there are products that you can use in the mop water that helps the tiles from being slick. - Q: hi we have old carpet on top of tiled floor in our dining room the carpet really needs replacing but I have no idea how to fix the grippers down onto the tilesany ideas how I can do this without pulling up the tiles?
- I will have to assume you are talking about vinyl tile?? I can't imagine laying carpet over ceramic tiles!!! If your old carpet was wall-to-wall, all you need to do is untangle the old carpet from the needle-like protrusions located next to each wall. You can then lay new wall-to-wall carpet over the old tiles and connect it to the protrusions just like the old carpet was. If you are opting for an area rug, you will need to remove the old tacked-down carpet holders around the perimeter and repair or replace the vinyl tiles that now have holes in them.
- Q: We will be tiling a backsplash directly onto drywall after our countertops are installed. My question is -- what do I do about the electrical outlets in that area? The tile is about 1/4 inch thick -- and I want the outlets even with the tile (right?) After I tile around the outlet openings, then how do you make them flush when you put everything back together? For example, do I just pull the sockets out so that the screw brackets sit on top of the tile? If so, then do I need to drill screw holes through the tile? If so, then how do I make sure that the tile does not break or crack?
- when you take the cover off there is that metal part the switch or the plug is on and there is little ears like that has a screw on the bottom and on top so you're going to unscrew those screws and you're tile should be cut to fit behind those ears you would need longer screws i use course Sheetrock screws when i do this 11/2 should work and when cut the tile around the plug just make sure you don't cover the hole where the screw would go in to that's all it'll be easy when you get the hang of it tile and flooring expert

- Q: I have 12x12 tiles in my kitchen on the floor and about 5 of them are cracked/damaged. How hard is it to replace them, can I do it myslef or hire a professional? What materials will be needed?
- It's not difficult but it takes some strength and patience. You'll have to break off the damaged tiles and chip the mortar (cement like stuff) until it is flat and even. You can use a chisel for this since it's a small surface. Take out the grout around the tile as well. Then you'll need some mortar, the replacement tile, and grout (color need to match existing grout). Place the prepared mortar on the square using a trowel and lay the tile on it - make sure the tile is even with the existing flooring. If it sinks too low, add mortar, if it pops up too high, take out excess mortar. Then wait 24 hours and then apply the prepared grout over the tile using a rubber float. Scrub clean with wet sponge - might take several times to get the grout film off the tile surface. Wait another 24 hours for the grout to set before walking on it. All done.
- Q: I was using a steam mop and it started getting very hot and tripping the breaker system. electrician told me there was too many amps (?) for the small electrical cord to handle. He said most of the steam mops can be potentialy dangerous for this reason. My outlets and breaker system have been fine since I stopped using the mop.But now, it is very difficult to keep the tile floors clean. Any suggestions?

- Q: I have old, crumbly tile as a subfloor in my apartment. I recently put in vinyl flooring when I took my carpeting out. It now looks as if this tile (wood-like vinyl planks) are taking the shape of the subfloor, which was not perfectly even. I don‘t like that I see shadows of peaks and valleys in the new flooring in certain light. It also doesn‘t feel even when I walk on it barefoot, but I‘m extremely particular.1. Should a coating have been applied to even-out the old tile BEFORE the vinyl flooing was installed? (the company didn‘t want to take these up as they felt it was asbestos. the worker who installed the new floor said the old floor did not need a coating)2. Was this vinyl tile installed correctly?3. If it wasn‘t installed correctly, could this affect the vinyl tile/planks over time -- could it warp, perhaps? 4. What do I do if it was installed incorrectly and the company does not do anything about it without a fee?? (There‘s a warantee on the floor IF it was installed correctly only)
- Your new floor will look good when new, but will eventually match the surface of the floor that it was installed on top of. How much this bothers you is a matter of personal taste, but your contract should specify the installation standards. If the installation matches the specs in the contract and you simply don't like the way it turned out, you're pretty much SOL. Doubtful you'll get much satisfaction from the installer.
- Q: Remodeling the bathroom...How can i drill a hole in ceramic tile...What kind of drill would I use..or what kind of file would be best to make a hole in the tile to go around the shower faucet..Thanks for your input...
- Which tile is it? porcelain or ceramic?? they are 110% different Porcelain tile you need to get a VERY high quality diamond/tunstencarbide drill bit/ holesaw. if it a small hole you need to drill then a simple glass bit will work, but use plenty of water For ceramic tile a a big hardware store sell an inexpensive holesaw for the larger holes and a glass bit will work fine on smaller holes
