Q: I'm a salesman for a welding supplies company, and a customer is interested in buying a diesel welder/generator for use in the paddock where he can't get electricity. While looking around I've come across a 200amp machine but it says it's a 200amp AC welder. it was my understanding that all welders are DC standard, and the AC current was only on welders to weld aluminum.: At 3000 RPM it would make 50 Hz. not 60 HZ power. My guess is that the speed regulation would not be good enough just because precise regulation costs more. It is rated for 75 Volts. It would probably be cheaper to buy a 10HP generator than try to adapt a welder.

Q: A new facility is having a problem with getting power supply, is it safe to run the entire facility (including AC/Ref systems) using a diesel generator? is the power quality guaranteed (considering good quality generator) since that suppliers of AC/Ref systems claimed that this facility would lose the warranty in case of using a generator. Thanks in advance.: I've done service work in areas after a hurricane, and I've seen a lot of units run off of generators. There's nothing wrong with it. Those systems are fairly hardy. But if the manufacturer says your warranty is at stake, you have to decide how much that warranty is worth to you.

Q: I own a 2300 square foot home with an upstairs and downstairs heatpump. If I wanted to buy a generator to use in the event my power went down what size should I shoot for. I would like to be able at a minimum to provide upstairs heat (1000 square feet), maintain the fridge and provide minimal light at night. Basic survival type stuff. Also how much fuel would normally be consumed running for 24 hours?Thanks I know this is vague so generalities are fine.: Heat pumps are pretty big users of power. I would get at least a 3500 watt but that would be good for heat, fridge, a couple lights and a tv only. Bigger would be better. It may consume 5-10 gallons of gasoline per day. Running your own generator is not cheap.

Q: I have a 3 bedroom / 1 bath home. It is just 2 of us in the house. Also, I've heard that there is way to plug your generator into any wall outlet and it will charge your whole house. Any truth to this?: Plugging a generator into an ordinary wall outlet limits you 15-20 amps of single phase power, or less than 2000-2500w. And it would only energize one leg, or about half the circuits in your house. You'd also want to throw your main breakers to prevent you from backfeeding the neighborhood and/or electrocuting a lineman. Overall, it's not a safe or efficient way to connect a generator. You want a generator plugin that will safely allow more power to fed into your house along with a transfer switch that will properly isolate your house from the grid whenever you want to connect a generator. As for sizing, you need to figure out what you really need vs. what you have, and for how long. For most storm-related outages, you can probably get by with a relatively small amount of power (refrigerator, a few lights, etc) for the few hours or at most 1-2 days that power will likely be out. If you want to cover longer outages or you have higher level of necessities, then you'll need a larger generator. Also, you need to worry about a fuel supply especially if you're planning for a long outage. Fuel transportation and storage can both be problematic, although the problems vary by fuel type (gasoline, diesel, natural gas or propane).
