- Q: want to tile counter top with out using hardboard
- It can and will hold up on one condition w/o a backer board.The top must be 2 3/4 ply wood or nova ply( HDF) , not the single layer counter top with the false edge that makes it look like its 1 1/2 thick. Other wise you need a backer board so the tile meets tile codes( ATC and TCA guide lines) for a minimum substrate which is 1 1/4 A few special thing need to be done but it will work. - Q: My husband and I laid 4x4 square ceramic tiles on our counter tops. We have sealed them and everything....So the question I have is how do you get rid of the sandy resadue on the tiles from doing the grout work?
- A sponge and paper towel. You need to initially wipe the surface of the tiles with the sponge, rinsing it frequently in clean water between wipings. When most of the sand is gone you can switch to a damp paper towel to get the final haze off. BUT note that when rinsing with the sponge you need to squeeze it out until fairly dry and try to avoid wiping the grout out of the gaps since this will slowly erode the grout and put new sand on the tiles. It also helps to let the tiles dry before doing the paper wiping, so you can see the haze and know when it's gone.
- Q: Is it possible to remove just the top row of the ceramic tile on my bathroom walls without damaging the remaining tile? I‘d like to replace the top row with glass tiles for a more updated look.
- Really don t know why every ones is trying to answer w/o out knowing what the tile is over as a substrate.. I ll give to 2 types of possible substrates and you determine what you need to do.. If your atop a dry wall and its your trim pc I wouldn t try to do it.. You ll rip up and tear out dry wall hunks.. If your on a cement board or a cement base ( mud walls) this can be done but done carefully..You can chip other tiles when doing this. The grout joint plays a factor in this too. If its a real small joint and using an un sanded joint, the use of a power tool won t get in there to take the grout out. You ll have to dig it out by hand and then try and take tile off.. - Q: This is what I need some information on. I decided to put some floor tile in front of my door in my living room where some carpet is. - Well the size is really up to you, I would probably keep it in a neat rectangle or square though, only as wide as the door is, but that's hardly a requirement. What kind of tile is it though, cause the installation will vary greatly depending on that. Need a bit more info =)

- Q: I live in a single-level ranch style house but on a concrete pad. I am re-tiling the kitchen floor. Upon removing the old tile, I discovered a 15 lb. felt pad had been glued to the floor; on top of this pad was thin set; then the tile. I live in Bakersfield, CA which is a dry and arrid climate.
- As long as it's not ceramic tiles, if so, I'd tear off the tiles. If it's linoleum, make sure you have a good subflooring and knock yourself out! Fallow the recommendations of the spacing around the walls AND take the time to bring in your flooring and let it in the room it'll be used for at least 24 hrs to dilate with the room's temperature and humidity. Don't pile all the packs in one corner, they need to breathe.
- Q: I need some tiles to replace on my roof. They type of tile, I‘m told is Santa Rosa tile and is made from a reddish orange color clay, does anyone know where to get this type of tile in central California?
- Tile roofs are far more common in your part of the country than they are in mine. Your best bet is to look for roofing supply businesses in your local yellow pages. If it turns out to be impossible to get the exact same tile, a substitute can always be found. If the tiles you need replaced are on a highly visible part of the house, consider removing tiles from another part of the house to make the repair match, and use the new tiles in the less visible area. Good luck with your repair.
- Q: I am making a unglazed ceramic tile-mosaic table and I know I have to seal the tiles as well as grout and then seal the grout. Can I use a tile-sealer as a grout sealer? Or do I have two use two different products?

- Any tile can chip and or crack if an object is dropped on it . But this depends mostly on the quality of the tile and what the tile body and glazing is made of. Some true porcelains are very hard and if they do chip the color goes all the way through the tile body so the chip is barely noticeable. Some older red bodied tile can chip the same way but is very noticeable because the red body shows through. Most average tiles made today are of the white bodied or a porcelain body. Must harder and chip resistant than the old red bodied tiles. To help judge a tiles hardness they are rated in a scale of 1/10. Called a MOHS scale. Any object such as a pc or silverware or a can edge when dropped can top chip a tile. A poor installation or under supported tile the whole tile can crack. High glaze or some times called a bright glaze can chip very easily because these glazes are not usually the best. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. - All i will say is: its normally not a best thought to put it correct on top. It turns into extra seemingly for it to come up. After which the approach of taking over a layer of laminate and a layer of ceramic tile could be that a lot tougher when it happened. I consider the one technique to make that work with out taking up the ceramic tile is to make an air tight seal between the two. I couldn't give you any strategies on how to try this though.
