- Q: I am installing 13x13 porcelain tile on a wall. Should I leave a 1/4‘‘ gap for grout or can I butt them up tight for a smaller grout line?
- You can buy very narrow spacers (1/8) and use unsanded grout. Close spacing (to me) looks better on a wall and floor. You have to use unsanded grout because regular grout can't be pushed between the tiles. You must leave a gap between the tiles - it's the grout that keeps water from getting behind the tiles.

- Q: We have a hardwood floor in our bathroom, and because it gets too damp, we want to install vinyl tiles on top of the hardwood floor. But I cannot imagine vinyl sticking to wood - can it be done successfully? Any glue tips??
- Vinyl tiles may not stick that well to the hardwood. They may also ruin the hardwood. If you aren't concerned with ruining the hardwood, then you should use some sand paper to rough up the surface to help the tiles stick better. I hope this helps!!

- Q: Dont want to lay down the rock. Want to attach strait to the plywood due to dish washer stove and cabinets. What is the best way for long lasting tile strait to plywood?
- Going straight to the ply wood sub floor will only result in failure of the tile to bond. There will be to much deflection in the floor , the bond will break between the thin set and the sub floor. There is a thinner system you can use called Ditra. Thin mat that is applied to the sub floor and then tiled over. If your dishwashers adjustable legs can be adjusted more or if they re all the way adjusted to max you can tile up to them. You ll still be able to get the washer out. I have seen one yet that can t be taken out,its a struggle but it can be done. I suggest the 1/2 cement board,properly installed, since this meets all tile codes,(both ATC and TCA) to properly support tile. - Q: The ceramic tile in my shower is looking really shabby and I‘d like to re-do it in subway tiles on the walls and mini hexagonal tiles on the floor. Has anyone ever re-tiled an old shower? What should I keep in mind? It is a single story house that is about 30 years old and I beleive it is all the original stuff.
- if you never done that kind of work you better hire a professional to do that for you because when you do a shower you have to know what you're doing or it's going to leak and you don't want that to happen when you finish with all that work and then find a leak that you can't figer out where its coming from
- Q: When the stick on tiles have come loose you get ready to re-glue them. What exactly do you clean the cement under neath them or do you just scrape it clean?
- Mineral spirits will dissolve most adhesives but sometimes you may need xylene or denatured alcohol. Using two sided tape, the good kind that is not cheap at home centers that is made for outdoor carpet for example should work better than most things to stick them down.
- Q: how to install the tin molding around the edge of the tiles
- Usually this is tacked into place with a few small nails. In the past i have experimented with using a contact adhesive to install the tin tiles and the molding strip, but this can be a bad option depending on the embossed pattern in your tiles or molding strip. The best and most secure option is to line the ceilding with ply (9mm thick or more - screwed into your ceiling joists so is secure) then to nail (small tacks) the tiles and the strips into place. You can also position the tiles and strips with contact adhesive to get them all in the right spot then go through and nail off when you are happy with the positioning.
- Q: Do they make that large of a difference? I am tiling my entire house, but can‘t find 1200 sq. ft. of the same tile dye number. I thought i could use different numbers in the bedroom. Is it going to be that noticable?
- Just buy a bunch of cases and mix them all up. See if theres an arrow on the back of the tile so you have them all pointed in the same direction.
- Q: Meaning, I was just wondering if you can lay a thin set of mortar then place vinyl tiles on it, and then grout it? This mabye a stupid question and most people would say why not just use real tile if your going to go through all that trouble, but just wondering?.Thanks
- No. The thinset would squish out all over the vinyl tiles since they are so thin. There would not be enough surface for grout to adhere to either. Good luck with your project.
