Q: because the fact at high altitude water boils faster, steam generated will be much faster, is it true?
A boiler is a sealed container being heated to turn water into steam. Because it is sealed from outside influences the height above sea level makes very little difference to savings of energy required to do that boiling it might even be a cost more situation due to depleted oxygen levels at higher altitudes .~~
Q: I am whatever is less than a rookie at this. I have a hot water boiler that heats my house. I also have a small hot water unit heater in my garage that I just replaced that is supplied hot water by the boiler. The original unit heater in my garage cracked in freezing temperatures. I do not need the garage heated all of the time but I do not want the new heater to have issues with freezing water. I don't know if this is possible, but I was wondering if I could use an aquastat or aquastat relay to safe guard myself from having these pipes freeze? Ideally I would use a thermostat to control heat when I want to have the garage warm enough to work in during the winter. When I don't need the garage heated, I would turn the thermostat way down and use an aquastat to control water temperature going out to the garage to keep the pipes from freezing. Is this possible? What components would I need? Any help in how this would be wired would be appreciated also. Thanks
The short answer is that your boiler can be wired to do whatever you want it to do. My recommendation is to hire a professional that is familiar with wiring your type of boiler. There are so many variables that aren't included in this question. Is it a gas, oil or electric boiler? Are you using just circulators or zone valves also? Are you using a zone control such as a Taco SR506 control? What model aquastat? Is it a cold start control or low/high limit aquastat? What kind of thermostat? Have you considered smart controls that utilize an outdoor sensor, such as the Logomatic controls on a Buderus boiler? How many zones do you have? With all these unknowns, there is over 100 ways to wire a boiler. Good luck! TomTheTechnician
Q: The bathroom water faucet is really cold but if I put the hot water on a tiny bit. The shower gets hot for a few min but turns cold without the cold water on. If I raise the temp in the boiler will that solve the issue? Rotoruter was just here to replace the washers.
I couldn't get the pdf open but I'll try to help. Sounds like a broken dip tube. This is located where the cold water enters the boiler. Shut off the water and unscrew the cold water going into the heater (might need a pipe wrench if it's really stuck on there) when you get that pipe off put your finger in the hole and pull up that clear plastic tube. That is your dip tube. it should be solid all the way down to almost the bottom of the heater and then have holes on the end. I'm guessing this tube might be snapped so it probably won't go down all the way. If that's the case then that's your problem, it's easy to replace and cheap to buy. The way a water heater works is simple, hot water will naturally rise and cold water will naturally sink. It's just one of the natural properties of water. so your dip tube brings the cold water straight to the bottom, then it get heated and rises to the top where it enters the hot water line and your fixtures. If the dip tube is broken when your water heater calls for water (like say after a few minutes in the shower) the cold water will come in, but with no dip tube to bring it to the bottom it mixes with the hot water at the top and gets into the hot water pipe before it can sink to the bottom. This would make the water lukewarm, and since showers never use only hot water, the lukewarm water will mix with the cold water at the valve and produce water that feels almost exactly like your normal cold water source. Turning up the temperature will likely not solve your problem, I think it's gotta be the dip tube.
Q: can i use spray paint near my gas boiler if i turn it off first?
It's a bad idea to use caned spray paint anywhere indoors. The smell is bad and a fine dust will drift around your home.....outside always
Q: i repaired a broken heating water pipe. how do i bleed my oil fired system it is base board heat
You should have a small valve at each radiator location. Depending upon your valve you will need a small key designed to fit the part you turn. Follow the system in order of the radiators and open each valve one at a time. You will usually get a hissing sound as the air escapes...you may also hear gurgling of water at this time. When you get a steady stream of water only, then you can close the valve and move on to the next radiator. When you complete the cycle, you can try to bleed the highest radiator again. I take a small cup with me to catch the water, as I usually get about that much after three radiators. Another thing you will need to do is make sure your expansion tank is not waterlogged. If this is an old system, it will be in the highest point of the system. There should be two valves to drain the tank. First close the valve that is connected to the loop of hot water pipe. Then, open up the drain valve to the tank. Depending upon how much water is in the tank, it may take a while to drain it. When water has stoppedd flowing from the tank, reverse the process by closing the drain line, and then re-opening the valve that is connected to the loop. You will hear water rush into the tank, that is ok. when this is completed you should then go around and bleed each radiator. Sometime, as you bleed the radiator, the pressure drops in the system, and you will get nothing coming out of the radiator...try again later when the pressure is again up to operating pressure. When the boiler has been on for a while, you will probably get best results on bleeding. We replaced are boiler two years ago, so the expansion tank is at the boiler location, plus we installed an in line bleeder at the boiler. We rarely bleed the system anymore.
Q: Is it safe for the blue pilot light to be left exposed on a boiler? There is meant to be glass infront of the flame isn't there? There is burn marks on the boiler where the flame has be left exposed.we are staying in a caravan and just noticed.
It really depends on what type of boiler it is but as a general rule if the manufacturer fitted a glass panel then there is a reason. If this is a room sealed boiler then fumes will be escaping into the caravan so this glass would need to be replaced and the boiler must be turned off until it is.
Q: How to determine the boiler capacity and the number of units
In the choice of the accident should also consider the standby reserve problem.
Q: in a bio mass power plant
The need for continuous blow down in any boiler is due to the fact that no steam system is 100% closed. There are always losses of steam from valve packing, flanges, turbine packing or seals, etc. Over a period of time the amount of water in the system would be depleted to the point that the boiler could not function. To counter this, water is added usually on a continuous basis. Since this water is never 100% pure there is, over time, a build up of chemicals in the the system. To deal with pH, oxygen in the system, etc, treatment chemicals are also added. To keep the chemistry in the right range, as water is added, some of the boiler water is removed as blowdown. You can do this on a batch basis but it is usually better for the system to do it on a continuous basis so the boiler water stays closer to the desired chemical balance.
Q: Just wondering before we bother our landlord with the query, if it is something we can fix?The water is kind of warm, but temp drops suddenly, we have a hunch that this is because the pressure on the boiler is showing below 1. Any ideas on how to sort this one out?
There should be a valve which supplies water to the boiler. Look underneath the boiler, it will be connecting two pipes, probably flexible braided pipe with the valve. Open the valve and watch the pressure increase. Close it when it gets just above 1 bar. Be careful as after a short while the pressure will jump up quickly, and you don't want too much water (too much pressure) in. Try that and if it doesn't work you'll have to get your landlord to get a gasman in.
Q: Okay, so our house has a steam boiler. It broke and is not heating the house- this actually happened last year too. But anyway, there's a glass gauge on the boiler where you can see the water level, and it's all the way full, not between the lines where it's supposed to be. I'be emptied a loooot of water out of it, but it just keeps filling up again. There's something that we labeled bypass valve, so I'm thinking it's important- do I need to flip that before emptying the water? Not sure if this made sense, but...yeah...
I don't know what other problems there may be but as far as the boiler filling up,if you have a coil in the boiler for heating your tap water, then it is probably leaking water into the boiler.I had this problem several years ago and plugged the coil and installed an electric water heater. This is a common problem when they get old.
