You have to look at the specification very closely and if you don't see it, ask. There are two types of solar cells Polycrystalline and Monocrystalline. Polycrystalline cells are inferior to Monocrystalline. You will also see that different kinds of panels have different output voltages.Since you will be wiring your panels together and connecting them to either a power inverter or a charge controller (if you have battery backup), you need to make sure the panels and controller work together for maximum efficiency. Be very careful when engaging an installer especially when they are trying to sell you the equipment too. Mostly, these are not engineers and you will end up with whatever they have in stock without regard for the most optimal design.

wire them in series parallel to get 8 volts at 200 mA, and that should charge a 2 volt battery. You may want to put in a series diode to prevent the battery from discharging into the panel when the sun is out. At 200 mA, depending on the battery size, you may not need much control, as that low a current will not overcharge a large battery, like a small auto battery. In fact it will take a very long time to charge it. edit: But do i need to add a regulator? If by that you mean a voltage regulator, no, as a solar panel has a high output resistance, and that will limit the current into the battery. If you mean a charge controller, if the battery is small, you may need a charge contoller to avoid overcharging the battery. But that is not a voltage regulator. .

Absolutely you can have solar panels in IL, there Anna. I am from Rochester, NY so I am a little familiar with frequent snowfalls! Plus my In Laws have solar panels and they live just outside of Chicago. (Oak Park sounds familiar, but I cant for the life of me remember the name of their community) Check with your local building department as to what you may have to do to your existing roof, as the panels and its necessary roof bracing can be quite heavy. Add a good Lake Michigan snowfall to an already heavy roof and you could have yourself a big problem! In better news many utilities and states around the country provide financial subsidies and incentives that along with the subsidies from those from the Federal Government greatly reduce the initial cost and speed up the amount of time it takes for you to recoup your initial investment. Solar panels by their very nature are warm, as they absorb the light from the sun. The latitude for IL is such that the solar panels on your roof will be tilted so much that the only way snow can build up is if there such a snowfall on your roof that its accumulation rises above the solar panels. They are actually working on building photovoltaic panels (Photovoltaic is actually the correct term for sunlight--electricity. Ordinary solar panels are those that use sunlight to heat water) that harness a larger range of wavelengths. From what I can gather the problem is either finding a material that absorbs more wavelengths, or finding a way to get multiple materials to coexist in a single panel. This situation will no doubt improve over time as new things like Nanotechnology give us the ability to create much more complex substances designed at the molecular level for light capture. Panels that can harness a wider range of the spectrum do exist, but the technology is in its infancy, and therefore expensive and not widely known. This isn't too surprising when you consider that Photovoltaic technology itself hasn't been in the mainstream all that long. I am a bit doubtful of photovoltaics that work at night, for the simple reason that at night there is less of *every* kind of energy falling on earth. Less visible light, infrared, etc. Infrared just happens to be particularly good at giving away hot objects, which is how Night Vision goggles work.
