No, just an amateur. I guess that could be called an Enthusiast. I think most people find the topic somewhat interesting, some more than others. Why do you ask?
Q:How do Solar Panels Work?
A solar panel is a panel of a certain material that is very sensitive to light. Now, when you place if out in the sunlight, the photons enter that material, and gets converted to energy in the form of electrostatic electrons. These electrons gets carried away by the small silver wires you see running zig-zag over the panel, and is then used as electronic current. It is actually a lot more intricate and detailed than this, but this is more or less how it works. The reason is works better in sunlight, is simply because sunlight has a lot more energy behind it than lightbulbs and other sources, but they work as well!

The more energy you consume from renewable sources of energy (i.e solar, wind, etc) the less you are consuming from non-renewable sources such as natural gas. Solar panel's rate of producing electricity depends on many different variables. Are the panels in direct sunlight? (with no trees or shrubs blocking the panels) There are panels out there made by Kyocera for example that are 85 watts, 65 watts, 50 watts. You should talk with a Professional about this. Q:Solar Panel Circuit Question?
I suspect the voltage is OK but the amount of current the solar cell is capable of delivering is less than the relay coil needs to operate. The current the relay tries to draw overloads the PV. You need to add additional PVs in parallel to operated the relay coil. An alternative is to use a low current draw relay coil or use a transistor switch. Hope this helps, NewtonLaw

Heat has nothing to do with making electricity . In fact when they heat up they give out less so its good to keep them cool . With size they give out equal amounts of volts but less amp the larger the more amp you get. Solar cells work with white light that knock the electrons around that produce electricity . To much such as putting a magnifying glass on them will burn them up but will kick out twice the volt but only for a short amount of time before they burn up . If you can keep them cool with an intense light like that im not sure what they will do but to much heat will destroy them. Edit: Yep you got that right . As far as the desert to make up for the loss of volts because of the heat they just add a few more cells . Say there going for 2 volt it takes 24 cells because each gives you /2 volt but most use around 36 cells if not more . That would give you 8 volt then a regulator regulates the amount going into the battery . Most will put 3 volt into the battery to 4 volt . Freezing temps aren't going to do a thing to them as long as the sun hits them without snow covering them . I build mine with 40 cells getting 20 volt and a bit more on some . That way if its a cloudy day i still get over 3 volt and plenty of amps .

I have been researching solar electric (photovoltaic) for a while now and find that the up front cost will generally take 0 or more years to pay back. While the life expectancy is 30+ years, giving you 20 years of free energy, most people don't have the initial 20-30,000 start up cost. I've found that wind turbines can be built fairly inexpensively and parts can be easily obtained. The trade off is that wind turbines require maintenance and you also need to be in a reasonably windy area, many municipalities will have restrictions that will impact your ability to put one up as well.
