Q:Im looking into renovating our kitchen and thought i would cut some costs with doing some renovating ourselves. Is tiling easy to do yourself, how is it done and what surfaces can they be laid on?Thanks
Laying tile isn't hard,go to Lowe's or home depot and get a tile saw,it doesn't have to be a high dollar one, they have Rhino board for the places that have to be stable and moisture proof, and get the trawl for it,it doesn't take a lot of the glue, you'll see the teeth on the side of the trawl, put some on the wall or floor, run the trawl(teeth side towards the surface, leave lines of glue about 3/16 s thick, that's enough to hold it,if it big tile squares make it a little thicker, they also have some spacers for putting between the tile, keeps it straight as well, then let it harden up and grout it,have several 5 gallon buckets of Fresh water(replenish the water when dirty) and a good sponge for wiping it down shortly after grouting.
Q:I need to tile a kitchen back splash from counter to cabinets. Backerboard at the moment is drywall, textured and painted. I‘d like to hear some opinions on tiling directly over this or using cement backer board. Also thinset or mastic?
You said textured. Is that textured paint or lumpy texture . If lumpy texturing, you have to get it smooth. Sand ,scrape or replace, just so its smooth to go over. No cement backer board required. This really isn t a wet area to really be concerned about.. Thinset or mastic will work fine. Thin set is a little harder to work with if your not all thatexperiencedd. But thin set is cheaper. If your using a self stacking tile its real easy. But if the tile your using requires spacers to hold it up until you set the spacer its a pia, but can be done. Mastic , w/ the right trowel , the tile will pretty much set and hold into place until you put a spacer in. Thin set will skim up and set up much quicker when using over dry wall .. The moisture will absorb into the dry wall just faster so you can t do as big an area at once..So when I do thin set over dry wall I make my thinset just a bit( just a bit) so that it ll set a bit longer. This takes practice and you need a bit ofexperiencee. . Now if your using some glass tiles you should use thin set.And they want you to use a special enhanced thin set.. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
Q:What is the drill bit?
We generally use a small sandblasting bit on the market can buy a good use
Q:The interior of my shower is all glazed ceramic tile. I have always used Tilex for cleaning with no problem. Recently I used a Lysol Bathroom cleaner and now I haved horrible white streaks down the walls where I sprayed it. How can I get rid of the streaks? Is it the product that made them? I spent a lot of money building this shower. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!111
White streaks on the TILE? - or the painted walls. The only thing I can think is that that lysol bathroom cleaner was so powerful that it melted your grout (the stuff between the tiles) Only a very strong acid (murriatic?) would melt your tiles, that is ordinary white glazed (shiny) - try cleaning tiles w/car wax - polish - this will clean and make them shine. If your grout is ok - you can wax that too!
Q:We have a fireplace in our lower level that is outdated, dingy old masonry and doesn‘t fit with the rest of our updates down there. I would like to tile over it and have it ready for use before our family comes over for Thanksgiving. What is the best method?
You can attach tile directly to masonry, it has been done all over the world for centuries (Italy, Spain, Middle East all use tile on the exterior of buildings...) I would assume normal thin-set mortar would work, but I believe it would depend on the exact type of masonry- concrete block or clay brick. A thicker adhesive bed will likely be necessary to smooth over the rough surface, but because of the relatively porous surface of most types of masonry your bond should be excellent. My only word of caution would be if you have any cracks in the masonry. Make sure they are not active (widening and narrowing), which may occur with temperature and humidity swings. Either way, you may choose to weld the crack with epoxy to prevent any crack movements that may telegraph through your tile and crack it. Q:Tile maintenance
Tiles daily maintenance cleaning skills: 1, such as the brick surface appears a slight scratches, can be painted in the scratches on the toothpaste, with a soft dry cloth can be wiped hard to repair. If the damage is serious should be replaced or ask professionals to repair, so as not to cause harm to the person. 2, polished tiles should be regularly waxing treatment, 2-3 months is appropriate. The gap between the brick and the brick can be cleaned with the detergent from time to time, and then brush with a brush in the gap layer of waterproofing agent, can mold growth. 3, tiles daily cleaning optional detergent, soap and so on. With soap and add a little mixture of ammonia and turpentine cleaning tiles, tiles can be more clean and translucent. 4, tea, coffee, beer, ice cream, grease and other pollutants attached to the surface of the tile should be promptly scrub, if necessary, can be used sodium hydroxide or potassium bicarbonate solution decontamination. Ink, cement and other pollutants can use hydrochloric acid, nitric acid dilution solution, and paint, paint and other pollutants is best to use special cleaning agent.
Q:I have a bathtub that the bottom row of tiles are getting loose on the top portion. A few have come out.The row above seems ok.Can the bottom row be resealed or replaced without interfering with the upper tiles? If so how?
Yes. I just did that very job recently. Use a masonry chisel and a rubber mallet to breakaway the remaining tiles along the bottom row by tapping the chisel lightly across the top and sides of the tiles. Be sure to hold the tiles directly connected to the one you are removing firmly against the wall as you gently pry the tile loose. If you pull any tiles away from wall they will also need to be removed and replaced as well. Carefully knock off all of the old grout and the old adhesive left on the wall. Clean and dry wall apply replacement tiles with tile adhesive/grout mix. use rubber tile spacers to keep the new tiles aligned while they set up. Remove spacers after 30 minutes and lightly rub off the excess grout with a tile float and damp sponge. Let dry overnight and buff with a clean towel. apply grout sealer and caulk along edge of tub and corners to insure a good waterproof seal. Good luck.
Q:We are in the process of buying a Fannie Mae home which is in very good condition. We did however find a hairline crack on about 6 of the 12 x 12 tiles in the master bathroom floor. The Home Inspector said there are no signs of foundation problems on the outside of the home. He said because we live in Texas the ground settles and expands and this could have caused the crack. Because there are no signs of foundation troubles on the outside of the home as long as we water the foundation we shouldn‘t have any problems. There is also a door that closes on it‘s own which indicates there could be a crack? However it‘s just one door out of about 12. Should we be worried or does the inspector know what he‘s talking about.
The inspector knows some what what he s talking about. Movement like this can cause tile to crack but in most cases the cracks will run in a fairly straight line. Are the tiles that way? Or are they here and there? If the are more in a random pattern, tiles my be loose , the workmanship was poor and thin set wasn t applied right or thin set was to wet , dry or possibly had skinned over before tile was set. There are easy ways to tell if the tiles are loose to see if thats the problem. The door shouldn t be a problem to fix so I would be more concerned with the tiles. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.
Q:12x12 ceiling tile are loose and sagging
it can be a job.look in the ceiling, there should be tie wires holding the frame of the tiles up.they may need to be adjusted.to get the ceiling flat you will need to pull a string from one end to the other of the ceiling or use a laser
Q:Anyone know who carries Emmevi ceramic tile?Looking for Emmevi ceramic Opale 12.5‘ * 12.5‘ tile. Willing to pay for info and tile. Need some tile ASAP
I found some possibilities. One is the manufacture and perhaps they can tell you where they sell their dropped products. Their # in Italy is 0536-843806 and fax is0536-845000. One local place that you can find a store located near you that carries discontinued tile is Factory Outlet.or their # is 910-343-9077. And Tile Outlet which has a store locator only ( use your zip code).. GL
