- Q:I am tiling my kitchen and My house was a prefab. and OLD. The plywood used was 1/2 (I measured it). what thickness of backboard/cement board should I use for under the tile and on top of the plywood? I was thinking 1/2 backerboard/cement board so there is 1 of subfloor under the tile. Do you think this is enough? Also, I am tiling around my cabinets, what do I do about the dishwasher? Do I tile around it? If I tile under it, it won‘t fit in the spot then. I was going to tile around it... I do have room to tile under the fridge though. There is space above.
- All tile hand book guide lines require a MINIMUM of 1 1/4 total substrate thickness to do ceramic flooring. This is both the ATC and TCA guide line. ( America Tile Council and Tile Council of America.) Should be fine won t cut it with ceramic , you need an additional 1/2 ply cross layed, glued and well nailed or screwed w/ no seams lining up . Then an additional 1/2 inch substrate . This using a cement board in most cases. This must be thin setted down and nailed or screwed in the proper fashion. You asked about the thin setting the cement board down, all I ll tell you is that I follow all recommended guidelines to be safe and I ve never had a problem.. The reason for this is because the thin set allows for no gaps , holes or spaces for movment of the cement board for a firm solide base for tile.. The refridge should be moved out during all this and then brought back in several days after the grouting is done to allow a little extra time to have the thin set dry more because of the extra weight .. As far as your dishwasher , your locking it in because of the flooring change..There you ll have to make some choices.. - Q:CAN I LAY TILE WITH NO GROUT LINES?
- If its in a no moisture area . May be . But unless its Trazo or Granite square cut on . And I only do that on counter tops. If you don't seal seal with grout water can get in cracks and cause problems with tile adhesion and sub floor failure. I'd use the thin grout lines.

- Most of your thinsets are a latex thin set. Glass tile needs the step above this type. Always use a white thin set. Ceilings are a bit trickier since you ll need a good mastic . There are special techniques to do this but you asked for the best material. White extra modified latex thin set. Such as Super Flex by Tec, TA 391 if I remember right. - Q:If you were going to tile an entire room would you start from the walls or floor? The room is only small 12m walls amp; 4m floor amp; is a basic toilet amp; basin. There are no border tiles amp; no fllor to wall tiles.

- Q:My foyer and hallway is white tile with white grout. I am more vintage/traditional and was going to be using new grout. Are there any other colors besides white that will look good for the grout?
- They missed a step....Use a good clear silicone caulking in the 'crack' where tile and grout meet wall. Otherwise, if for example, someone showers and gets water on the floor, it will get into this area, go under the tile and start to ruin the flooring under the tile. Mold and mildew can also grow in these wet areas. Molding trim only covers the edge of the tile giving it a neater more finished appearance, but it's still cosmetic...to protect, you need to seal or caulk around the outer edges of your flooring. You will also need to use a sealant on the grout between your new tiles as well, or the same problem can occur, as grout is porous and can absorb water and soapy liquids which then go down into the underflooring, and different liquids can stain the grout.
