Q:So...I'm learning about how steel is made and I'm wondering if there is a more environmentally friendy method. I view it as unfriendly b/c of the oxygen that is injected when the steel is in the blast furnace or electric arc furnace. This oxygen bonds w/ the carbon to produce CO and CO2. THis is necessary to reduce the amount of carbon content to produce harder steels. So what other methods are there that can be used w/o having to end up w/ co and co2? thanks
From what I understand of it, US steel is better as the steel is more recycled than Canadian, so a lot of that oxygen / CO2 has already taken place compared to working from ore. The second reason US steel is environmentally ahead of Canadian is that US tends to use Electric Arc, while Canadian uses Basic Oxygen, Basic Oxygen uses more energy than electric arc, and I think it also uses more oxygen, but I would suspect that oxygen that it uses is 'waste oxygen' and not converted into Co2 because the Co2 process is limited by the carbon, and steel only has so much carbon.
Q:Im getting a new guitar soon, and it has steel strings. ive heard that nilon strings are better? thanks:)
Nylon strings aren't better The very notion of such is absurd. They're different. They sound different and feel different. Different guitars are designed for different types of strings. Nylon string guitars are most commonly associated with classical music (you'll never see a real classical musician play a steel string guitar) Whoever told you that nylon strings are better should be ignored altogether. They're obviously not a good source of information.
Q:How are steel coils used in the production of transportation systems?
Steel coils are used in the production of transportation systems as they are an essential raw material for manufacturing various components, such as chassis, frames, body panels, and suspension systems. These coils are shaped, cut, and welded to create the structural framework and body of vehicles, ensuring strength, durability, and safety. Additionally, steel coils are also used in the production of railway tracks and infrastructure, further supporting the transportation sector.
Q:Can steel coils be coated with anti-tampering materials?
Yes, steel coils can be coated with anti-tampering materials. These coatings are designed to enhance security measures and deter any unauthorized access, tampering, or theft of the steel coils.
Q:What are the dimensions of steel coils used in the mining equipment industry?
The dimensions of steel coils used in the mining equipment industry can vary depending on the specific application and requirements. However, there are some common dimensions that are often used. Typically, the width of steel coils used in the mining equipment industry can range from 600mm to 2000mm or even wider. This allows for flexibility in the manufacturing process and ensures that the coils can be tailored to fit various equipment sizes and specifications. In terms of thickness, steel coils used in mining equipment can vary from 1.5mm to 20mm or more. The specific thickness is determined by factors such as the type of equipment, the intended use, and the level of durability required. The length of steel coils used in the mining equipment industry can also vary, but commonly falls within the range of 1000mm to 6000mm. Again, this allows for flexibility in the manufacturing process and ensures that the coils can be cut to fit the specific requirements of the equipment being produced. It is important to note that these dimensions are not set in stone and can be customized to meet the specific needs of the mining equipment industry. Manufacturers and suppliers in the industry are often able to provide coils in various sizes and dimensions to accommodate the diverse range of equipment used in mining operations.
Q:Is the product of mild steel environmentally friendly? does it produce any emissions? The same question for leather aswell.
Steel just rusts, it doesn't produce any emissions just sitting there. They even make architectural steel called Corten to rust to a nice patina. If you consider how the steel was made in the first place, a great big NO! Steel making requires massive amounts of electricity plus it gives off some nasty fumes in the liquid state. Leather itself doesn't emit much of anything, but the dyes might. Again though, if you look at how it's made, tanning leather is right up there with steel mills and paper mills for pollution, some of the worst.
Q:What is the most common bullet resistant steel that is used, can certain bullets just not be stopped, also what type of glass is bullet resistant or is that special made.
If you want to stop a bullet with steel, you need strength, ductility, thickness, or some combination of these. The higher the strength, the greater the force the steel can withstand before it breaks. The higher the ductility, the more the steel can deform before it breaks. Unfortunately, when you increase the strength, the ductility usually goes down. That's why you may need substantial thickness. 1 centimeter of precipitation-hardened stainless steel (15-5 or 17-4, for example) is probably enough to stop most handgun bullets.
Q:Recently I bought Bleach's Grimmjow's replica sword from swordsswords and I was wondering how strong is 440 steel when used for a 21 inch blade? Can it cut effectively? Is it dangerous?
440 is stainless steel, and isn't designed for functional swords. Carbon steel blades are. I'd say that if you're looking for a functional sword, forget about this one. It's probably a wall-hanger. Most swords today are.
Q:Why is steel a stiff material?I'm doing a project on the use of steel in the construction of skyscrapers - and obviously, for the inner steel skeleton of a skyscraper the steel support beams and girders will have to be stiff so that they don't fall apart or the building doesn't shake due to wind or other natural forces. But in my research I've found that steel (mild steel to be more exact) is ductile and malleable, meaning it can be shaped fairly easily. However, how can steel ALSO be stiff - the definition of stiffness is the tendency to withstand bending and stretching - so my question is. How can this material be BOTH ductile/malleable, AND stiff? and why? :)Thank you in advance if anyone takes the time to answer this, would be appreciated - I'll give you 10 points straight away if the answers conclusive
To say that steel can be bent and shaped fairly easily isn't quite true. It takes multiple tons of force to do so, requiring some very heavy machinery. I think you're confusing a couple of concepts. For example the idea of elastic modulus, versus rigidity Rigidity is the ability of a structure to resist a load. That depends not only on the elastic modulus, but on the size and design of the structure or object. You can build fairly rigid structures out of wood. For example roller coasters. Even though wood has a much lower elastic modulus than steel, meaning that it takes much less force to bend and deform a given sample of wood.
Q:I have been wanting a new pair of hiking boots, but haven't had the money. I just got a job that requires me to have steel toed boots. The job is only for a few weeks, but I may be required to wear them on other jobs in the future. Regardless of which style I get, I will most likely be buying Red Wing boots. On their website, I see they have steel toed hiking boots. What is the purpose of a steel toed hiking boot? Why would a hiker need to have steel toed boots? Wouldn't that just be more weight? I see that some of their hiking boots have aluminum toes, claiming to be 33% lighter than steel with the same protection. Would these boots be good potential hiking boots as well as suitable for construction or should I just focus on work boots and buy myself some hiking boots at a later date?
This Site Might Help You. RE: Are steel toed hiking boots worth buying? I have been wanting a new pair of hiking boots, but haven't had the money.
