- Q: I have old pergo floors in the dining and kitchen area and tile everywhere else in the house. How hard is it to remove both types of floors and how do I go about removing each? I want to put down real hardwoods and carpet in the bedrooms. Also, new tile in kitchen and bathrooms.
- The pergo flooring(if free floating) is very easy to remove. Just start at a wall and start taking apart, they usually snap together. As for the tile, that will be a project. They make scrapers for floors, either manual or power. I would suggest using either. Your going to have to make sure that all material is off the floor, otherwise when you go to put down the hardwood, you will have a very hard time. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.
- Q: I have a very small bathroom off of my master bedroom. It has black ceramic floor and I don't like it. Can ceramic be painted? If not, is there any way to go over it without tearing it all out?
- If it is glazed and hi-gloss you might have to use a de-surfacing compound (etching compound first), other than that, knock your self out!!
- Q: I am nearing completion of construction for my own new 2 story home. On the 2nd floor, I am planning to install a floating bamboo floor (5/8" stranded type) over gypcrete (lightweight concrete floor poured over radiant in-floor heat tubing. I think I can handle most everything, but I am not certain what the best option(s) is for running the floating floor into the staircase which goes down to the first floor. In the rest of the house, the edge of the floating floor will get covered by baseboard, but at the top step, there is no such option. Does anyone have suggestions as to the best way to deal with this? One more thing - it's tongue and groove and I was planning to glue the boards together. I already have the flooring and there are stairnosings I have with a groove on them which I was planning on assembling with the planks to cover the stairs too.
- Just make sure you don't create a tripping hazzard. Purchase a hardwood stair nosing to match your stair treads (Oak?). Then make sure that the nosing hangs past the stair riser the same as the others. It will probably be Thicker than the flooring but you can take it to a local cabinet shop and have them cut a rabbett ( an offset) in it . Good Luck
- Q: what age should you give your baby floor time?I put my 5 month on the floor for floor time and he crys all the timei have toys to amuse him but he hate it...what do i do i don't wanna carry him 24/7..?
- Carpet is excellent for when the baby is studying to stroll and all of that... A little bit of extra cushioning after they fall. But later one, when they start spilling stuff in all places, you can be cleaning oatmeal, milk, and all sorts of other drinks or condiments out of the carpet, which is a royal suffering in the butt. In a ultimate world, i'd go for having hardwood in any area the place food is involved. Then have carpet in the dwelling areas and do not allow the kiddies to deliver food/drink in there. Honestly, it may even be higher to have hardwood throughout and just have some giant rugs within the living areas. That what I had developing up. We appoint a house now that has carpet all throughout the residence, even within the dining room! So i'm a bit anti-carpet at the second. There are all types of toys that do not work on carpet, too... Cars and trucks and trains and the whole lot else.
- Q: Does anyone have any experience with painting a wood floor white? How did it come out and how long did it last? Did it get dirty very fast?
- I have painted some floors in my time. They can hold up if done properly. Any floor gets dirty depending on any number of factors. If you choose to try it here is the answer I provided to a similar question . Sanding first is the best way to start. Make sure you vacuum with the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and then wipe with a tack cloth or a clean white cotton rag dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits. If you cannot deal with the dust wiping with a deglosser will work (check your local hardware/paint store). As suggested an oil base primer is the next best step (although there are some quality latex primers on the market). A topcoat of either an oil base or latex floor and porch paint is recommended (they come in colors including white). The oil base will take the wear better. The latex finish will eventually wear down leaving an eggshell like finish. Some people prefer this look. If you use latex you can put a polyurethane clear coat over it to add durability. However, it will also make the floor slicker, much like wax. Be careful how you clean your floor. Paint normally takes thirty days to cure and should not be cleaned the first week. After one week a mild soap and water cleaning is alright. Solvent and abrasive cleaners should never be used.
- Q: I am laying a three part epoxy resin flooring to a factory floor. Any tips?????
- Normally an epoxy resin floor is 2 part epoxy with a third component is color flacks that are hand spread over the resin as it is spread on the floor.. I am assuming you are going to apply this to a concrete floor. Mix the resin according to the instructions on the box or container it comes in. Follow all instructions that come with the product relative preparing the floor, such as cleaning up dirt and grease. once the resin is mixed in a large enough sized container. You may want to apply the resin around the outside edges of the floor about 5 or 6 inches with a throw away brush. spread the resin on the rest of the floor with a paint rollers. Do relatively small sections at a time and sprinkle the color flakes over each section as though you were broadcasting grass seed or ice melt. You will probably find that you will need 2 coats of the resin to cover the floor well.
- Q: Hi all,I have to write an article about price floorsother than the obvious price floors impact, what can I talk about?thanks
- I would talk about minimum wage (fair labor standards act). This is also an example of a price floor which lifts wage up and stops it from going any lower. Much like the floor below your feet, lifts you up and stops you from going any lower. Many young people are in favor of minimum wage legislation and minimum wage increases. Note how some states stick with the Federal Minimum, but other states employ their own minimum which is above the Federal level. You could highlight those firms that are most impacted by minimum wage increases. You could note who are the main folks working for minimum wage. Some would argue that if minimum wage becomes too comfortable or livable then where is the motivation to develop skills and get off the minimum wage roller coaster. Etc.
- Q: How do you remove excess vinyl flooring glue from the walking surface of a newly installed floor?
- You could try scraping it off with a scotch brite pad and some water. You could try a razor blade but try it without cutting the floor. Otherwise, you could try a solvent or mastic / glue removal. If it's fresh vinyl, you could easily mark up the vinyl. Make sure it's completely dry before removing the excess so you don't ruin it. You could get the glue remover at Home Depot, Lowes or Ace Hardware store. You could also try the link below. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
- Q: I'm not sure what is wrong with the floor in my house. On the hardwood part there are lumps forming all over the place. In the laminate kitchen there a lumps and you can feel where it's sinking in certain places. What kind of company should I get to look at the floor or foundation? The house is only 7yrs old and we just moved in 6 mos ago. We had the home inspected before we moved in. Is there any way insurance pays for this if it's a major problem? Shouldn't our inspector have seen this? It's seems like there are new bumps and sinking every day.
- IT MIGHT NOT BE THE FLOOR SINKING AS MUCH AS THE FLAKE BOARD THAT IS THE FLOORING. SOUNDS LIKE THE FLOOR SHOULD HAVE BEEN 3/4-PLYWOOD
- Q: what is the biggest size tank (in gallons) that you could have on the second floor of a house?
- If your floor wont hold a 75gal tank, then you need to move as your house is likely to fall down any day. A large book case or a couch with three adults weighs around the same. But make sure the tank stand spreads the weight across the full lenght, and try and position the tank next to a load bearing wall on the ground floor. Ian
