- Well you can go under the house and make sure the joist are sound, if they are you could add a few studs underneath the soft spots this will help. The only real solution is to have the floor torn up in that spot and replace the sub flooring. This will mean replacing the linoleum or tile. I'd try the joist first.

- If you are ripping up the old flooring down to the support beams, you need to use 3/4 inch plywood (not MDF, not OSB) to replace it. Plywood comes in 4'x8' sheets, so you will need 7 sheets and a circular saw or table saw to cut them to size. I really recommend you get either a professional or a really handy friend to help you, too.
- Q:My husband and i live on post military housing. We have all white linoleum tile flooring. It is absolutely horrible to clean. If the dog has an accident.. it literally stains the floor.. Bleach barely cleans it up. Also.. stuff peels off of it if we use bleach.. ( it's like a plastic film that comes off... i think it's the wax they put on it before we moved in ). So my question is-How else can we clean this floor? What cleaning products do you suggest? Thanks in advance :)
- It's possible that the bleach is destroying the surface coating of the floor, the top layer that makes it shiny. While it's okay to use bleach on most vinyl floors, it should be diluted and is not what I'd recommend for every day cleaning. It just isn't necessary and is too harsh. If you're not using something like a Swiffer, then hot water with mild soap, or any all purpose cleaner like Pine Sol or Mr Clean, or a couple of tablespoons of ammonia, or even plain white vinegar, are enough to clean a floor. I can't see the floor, so I don't know whether the coating is coming off your floor, or whether it's wax peeling up(seems unlikely; floor wax usually wears off but does not peel) but in view of the fact that things can seep into the floor and leave a stain, I'm guessing that the shiny coating is pretty much toast. it As to what to do now, if that were my floor I would get myself a top quality commercial type floor finish, an acrylic polymer sealer, and put several coats on. I can buy that stuff here at Home Depot, and janitorial supply places will also have it. The sealer seals the floor, then you can put a softer liquid polish on it, which protects the sealer. That top coat needs to be redone, but if you redo it often enough the sealer under it is never disturbed.

- You have one of two choices. You can either remove the glue from the subfloor or add a layer of lewan board (1/8 thick) to give you a clean surface to adhere your vinyl floor to. Be sure you use the proper adhesive for bonding your floor to wood. Also check the height of the finished floor to make sure the transition into other room is at the same level and doors clear the flooring. If necessary, you can get a thicker underlayment to elevate the flooring to the correct height. Just stay away from OSB (oriented strand board) and especially MDF (medium-density fiberboard, a.k.a. particle board). Both of these decompose with moisture. Stick with good old plywood. It won't let you down.
- Q:What are the advantages and disadvantages from a 1st floor apartment to a 2nd floor apartment?
- First floor apartment is cooler in the summer and your utility bills will be less. Also you don't have to carry everything up a flight of stair. Draw backs are noise from people walking,running,dancing,etc.. up stairs. Also the pluming is connected and if you get a backup it all comes out in your apartment. Second floor apartment has a better view, unless it's the parking lot. It's warmer in the winter as heat raises. I only had to turn by heater on in the mornings to knock the chill out of the air. It's also hotter in the summer. Not as much noise from the down stairs neighbors. The problem is carrying everything and I mean everything up a flight of stairs. Also when you move out it all has to be carried back down.
- Q:My kitchen floor is always sticky no matter how many times I mop it with vinegar, Ive used the Swifter wet floor mop and ever since my floor is super huber sticky!Why is it in the commercial they have a baby crawling on the floor????????????????????? saying its safe for babies?? - Try mopping with hot water and Dawn, but be sure to rinse it with clear water or it could still be sticky. You might want to rinse it a couple of times and maybe even skate around the kitchen on a couple of old towels to dry it and get any left over residue off the floor.
