- Q: i just bought this house and my kitchen floor tile is all cracked it was put on a wood serfice. i need a quick fix because redoing the whole kitchen needs doing but is not in my bugit at this time. can i cover it with linoleum with out it also cracking before i can remodle?.
- Cracked tiles usually indicate loose tiles, if they are loose, the vinyl or lino will show the cracks and loose tile in no time at all. If the tiles happen to be tight, and the crack is caused by a structure failure some where then the tiles can be treated so you can lay sheet goods over them. - Q: We are looking to buy a house and we‘re choosing between tile and hardwood floor. I prefer hardwood because I feel its easier to clean and more comfortable. Husband prefers the tile. Is it just personal preference or is one better than another, cleaning wise.
- Hardwood floors by all means. Especially if you live anywhere but the south or southwest. Wood floors have a bit of give to them so they are better for your feet and legs, particularly if you are on your feet alot. They make sense in an area where you want to make things cool as possible, but wood floors give a warm cozy feeling. In terms of long term value, hardwood floors add to the value of a house and often tile gives it a dated look.
- Q: We had redid our cupboards a couple years ago and still have to properly cover the hole that was left for the vent on the previous vent system. It looks like they used staples of some type but the way it is just needing 1 and a half (or less) tiles it‘s awkward.
- Most ceiling tiles have a tounge groove so each tile fits into another. When you are piecing in tiles it's impossible to get the tounges in the grooves without breaking them. I would suggest, cutting off the tounges with a razor knife and install with Liquid nails or some other construction adhesive. To keep the tiles in place while the glue is drying, cut a 2X4 long enough and put it under the tile while the glue sets up. You might want to put a towell between the tile and the 2X4 to keep from damaging the tile. For the 1/2 tile, score the backside of a tile with a razor knife then break it in half.

- Q: Behind my sink in the kitchen, I have a back splash that is white tile with an ugly floral pattern on about every other tile. - glazed tiles are fine to use in the bathroom, the important thing to remember is if they are set properly and to set on either mortar base or hardiboard. the main concern though, would be whether the surface is too smooth a finish when used on the floor, especially when the tiles are wet! this could become a hazard to your health! a lot of tiles used in a floor application, have a sanded or rough finish ,just because of that !

- I think painted tiles always look a bit dodgy, unless you really really carefully paint each individual tile and not the grout (which is a PAIN). You can get tile decals though to stick over them, which although not as nice as retiling usually looks ok.
- Q: I‘m trying to re-tile two small bathrooms. One is ~20 sf. The other is ~35 sf. I already have the tile, don‘t want any special designs, and have normal rectangular shaped bathrooms with a toilet on one wall (i.e. very few weird cuts). There is already tile on the floors that will have to be taken up. How much should I expect to pay to get someone to install it?
- Tile labor varies but you can plan on 4/5$ a S/F not a s/y.. This won t include prep or rip out or any setting materials. That depends exactly what needs to be done.Rip out will vary too depending on just how the tiles are set now. I ve done rip outs that have taken an hr and have done ones that size that have taken all day. So have an installer look at the rip out part and quote a set price so both of you know on the rip out.
