- if your down to the sub floor, you can put down 1/4 inch backer board on top of the sub floor. then the difference can be made up with the laminate. laminate floor comes in different thicknesses. when you say your husband busted up the tiles, do you mean ceramic tiles? ceramic tiles would be set in a layer of mortar. the laminate does not have to be exactly the same height as the existing wood floor. you can put a transition piece between the new laminate and the existing wood floor. you will put a transition piece between the old and new floor anyway. it's easier if the floors match, but they don't have to be exact. there's molding or thresh hold strips that go between the new and old floor. they come for floors that are even as well as uneven.

- Is the floor sound? ok to walk on etc., If yes just looks bad, then you can fill in cracks with wood putty not joint compound. then best/easy would be to prime/paint. they now make lots of paint for floors. also where do you live? is it moist, hot, dry, etc. that will need to be figured into type of paint. check with local hardware like ace or true value. if do not want to paint, you can stain, use wood putty in the same color or you can add stain to putty first, darkening putty, fill cracks, than stain all over. dont forget to use sealer after. good luck

- Home Depot carrys a flooring called Allure. It looks like wood but its vinyl and really cheap. Installs over just about anything and unlike Pergo its moisture proof. Its super easy to install too. This would probably be cheapest but I would really look into getting the real wood floors refinished, you will be SO much happier with real wood.
