- I use oxyclean in my residential grade carpet steamer all the time and I haven't noticed any negative effects. I add about half the carpet soap that the instructions say to use and use about a tablespoon of oxyclean. Make sure to use really hot water and shake the water holder around to dissolve all the oxyclean before you put it in the machine. The reason its OK to use oxyclean is that any residue left behind won't be sticky and attract dirt like soap products would. That being said make sure to test out the oxyclean on a hidden corner of the carpet first, just brush in a small spot to make sure nothing bad happens.
