- OK... So what has your homework actually asked you to explain? Can you post the question...? There are moment forces going through a crane, is the aim of the homework simply for you to explain what a moment force is using a specific example ? A crane can be thought of in simple terms as a cantilever, ie one supported end and one free end, the lever arm force as it is sometimes referred to in schools is actually the moment force i.e. the moment for a crane with a boom L=40m long lifting a load of P=10kN would beP*L = 10*40 = 400 kNm, this is ignoring the self weight of the boom, if the boom weighed W=1.5kN/m (thats per meter, not to be confused with kNm which is kilo newton meters) then the moment generated by the self weight would be (WL^2)/2 = (1.5*40^2)/2 = 1200kNm so the total moment would be 1600kNm, so just remember for a point load the moment is force * distance from support ( in cantilevers) hope this helps... :)

- Your baby crane might have stepped on something, But this is nothing like malnutrition, From what ive learned the crane may have a joint dysfunction in the knee but this very common in cranes, I really think you should take an X-ray of the cranes legs because,(and the baby cranes feet will expand over time) This could get worse. - Is this for a nuclear power station? If 2500 Te and 60m really are the specified loads and span then it is likely that it will be used very seldom. In theory you can design for any load to be lifted but maintenance on a crane system that is used once a year (10 years?) is a real problem. The main items to consider are: Availability of winches and bogies which then dictates running beam and rail sizes. For the spanning beam several alternative sizes needed to be designed and then costed. It will be not just weight but transport costs that determine the most efficient sizes The overall height of the crane will then determine the required roof height assuming that the crane is under cover. For comparison the Harland and Wolf cranes in Belfast called Samson and Goliath can lift 840 Tonnes each. Overall design needs to consider speed of travel, acceleration and deceleration rates and a host of other things.
