I imagine that a flare boom could be on the end of the crane but I know it's not always the case. The crane does what cranes do best... move things, usually from the ship to the platform or vise versa.

- Do not know where you live but I worked in a Shipyard in South Mississippi That had Cranes which picked up Modules which weighed 100 tons. Most were in the range of 50 to 70 tons the limiting factor was the range of the lift away from the crane. The further away from the Crane the less the load limit but the Cranes were rail mounted so they could traverse and carry the load anywhere. We had one Crane capable of handling 500 tons, a real monster. These are all located at Pascagoula Mississippi. Most were imported from Germany.

- Gravity, that's basically why all things collapse. With cranes you also tend to have the issue of them being overloaded also but at the end of the day it's still gravity that's the enemy. There is some talk of a supporting strut having been damaged by a piece of falling metal and the crane toppling as a result of that but it's the first time I've ever come across a piece of lifting equipment, and that's what a crane is, reliant on just one component to keep it standing up. Always remember that gravity thing is out to get you.

- It flies off a safe distance from Curiosity and then is allowed to crash. It's done its job and there's no reason to keep it around.
