- Q:I am looking at putting the self stick vinyl tiles in my new addition. It has a concrete floor and I was wondering if the vinyl will have a hard time sticking to the concrete. Do I need some type of sub-floor? I am wondering this mainly because we live in iowa were is can get pretty cold in the winter and I didn‘t know if that would affect the stickyness.
- Self stick tiles commonly loosen from subfloors, concrete or wood. They can be installed successfully over concrete but it is absolutely vital that your concrete be smooth and very, very clean. If you are concerned about adhesion it would be wiser to use glue down vinyl tiles which aren't much more expensive, rather than build a very expensive wooden subfloor which wouldn't guarantee the integrity of peel and stick tiles.

- If they are the newer cement tiles, I would try a small cement drill, about the size of a 16 penny nail. Try to gently drill a hole in the tile where you want to nail it to the roof. Or use screws that don't rust. Don't nail or screw down to the tile, that will break it. You just want the nail to hold the tile in position. If they are the older mission tiles, made of clay, the same might work. But they are very brittle and may need a wood support shaped the same as the tile to put under before drilling.................JJJ

- If your husband is concerned because of the cuts, it ll depend a lot on what type of tile your working with.. A soft bodied tile that is self spacing. The kind that has little lugs on them and fit together fairly tight, these are easy to do.A little more challenging if they require a spacer. If you use a mastic, the tiles will stay pretty much in place when you set them and then place a small spacer in the joint. - Q:I‘m going to install a porcelain tile floor. My question is when I install a tile up against a cabinet that people can see. Should I but the tile up against the cabinet or should I leave enough space to grout between the tile and the cabinet. Just wondering what the standard practice is , and what looks the best. Also I have a small crack in the concrete, which the tile company said it was so minor that not to worry about it. Although it caused a crack in my old tile that was originally installed. I would really like to prep the crack prior to installing the new tile. What would you recommend doing to prep the crack. Thanks
- If at all possible remove the cabinet and tile under it this way you will have a new clean and level floor otherwise you are leaving a quarter inch drop off at the least for water,bacteria and mold to grow. As for the crack if you have a circular saw buy an in-expensive carborundum blade or mmasonryfor it then grove out the crack and use a hand chisel wherever you can't reach or use a hammer and mmasonrygouging chisel for the whole crack,diamond wheels on grinders work well also if you have one,then wire wheel or wire brush out the grove and vvacuumit thoroughly then put silicone in it to just below level then using your thin set mix enough to apply a thin layer to each side of the crack and level out the crack then use fiberglass drywall tape and possibly a geo grid type netting or vvinylscreening, if the slab is older and somewhat settled this is the only way without busting out the slab which is probably only 3 inch thick,and pouring a new 6 bag per yard high strength concreteon a vvibratortamped ssubstrate withvapor barriers.

- After 19 years as a hard surface flooring contractor, I have to agree with the last 2 answers. Your tile has been fired in a kiln baking on the color. And as stated, the epoxy paints are a quick fix, but don't last. Sorry to say, time to re-tile....

- Quarry tile is not meant to shine . It s quality as a tile is its slip resistance. This is why its spect out in the use in restaurants and bar areas where water is present a lot. There are cleaners that you use to keep it clean but adding a product to make it shine will take away its main anti slip properties and make is slippery when wet.. - Q:I am doing a research project at school on erosion, and one of the members on my research team said something about underground tiles that run water into the nearest body of water. We have been trying to locate a source, or ANY piece of information on this subject, but have failed. Is there anyone who can help us?
- These aren't erosion tiles, they are drainage tiles. Do a web search on tile drainage and you'll find out all you need to know about the subject. BTW, tiles and tile lines are just underground pipes with holes in them, used to lower shallow water tables. It wasn't clear to me that you understood this, so sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious.
