Q: I'm thinking of the power cables that connect houses to the national grid in the UK. Not only do they appear to be the green colour of copper in full sunlight, but this colour isn't evenly spread. In places there is still black. What causes this, as it's presumably not exposed copper or the colour would always be apparent?
This could simply be moss / lichen or fungus growing. the north side of the cable will have more moss on it than the south side. As the sun is over the equator and England is in the Northern Hemisphere so the sun lights the south side of the cable, and the moss grows on the darker side. This is a classic way of telling directions in a forest or paddock. Garret
Q: im having probelms with the end piece that goes into the computer, and it needs to be replaced.
Try any electronics store
Q: theres a red wire, black and yellow. i turned the power supply to the shower off at the main switch board. but when cutting through the cables to repair it it nocked off another switch on the switch board even though the shower is on its own circuit. does this mean there is still power in the wires and is there any power in the yellow wire (earth). witch is the live wire red or black?
Power near shower or to? You have 220 power and both the red and black are live (will deliver 110 to earth.)
Q: I have plugged my old laptop power cable into my USB hard drive, and now it does not work at all. Have I completed fried the circuits? Is there any way to get the data back if I have please? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
The circuits might have gone on the hard disc. But data platters would not be gone. You might get back your data, but it involves a great expenditure. You have to send the disc to the manufacturer for retrieval of data. Unless the data is very important, I would suggest junking the disc.
Q: I have a Benq scanner 5000 and have lost its power cable. Please tell me what adapter to buy! input = 220v
The power cable and adapter will probably be unique to the scanner. You'll have to order the right one from HP, or through a computer store. The USB cable should be standard. Most printers and scanners use a USB cable with a Type A connector (flat) on one end, and a Type B connector (squared-off) on the other end. They're easy to find at Staples, as well as at computer stores.
Q: ok well my xbox wont turn on anymore i was playing it and it was fine when i put the controller on top of it and moved the power cable and all of a sudden the xbox turned off, so if anybody knows what could of gone wrong or have a solution i would greatly appreciate it.
Go to bestbuy and see if they are still giving out those free repairs and if that doesnt help get a ps3 because it never has any problems with its power cables!
Q: I have had my Sony Laptop for about 2-3years. And only recently is it acting weird. When I have my power plugged in, the laptop runs fine and can be on as long as the power cable is in. But as soon as I take my power cable out, it automatically shuts down.I checked the power management, and it says my battery has 0% power. I have tried taking the battery out and putting it back in, but it still does not work. The lights on my laptop indicate it is charging, but it does not put any power into my battery and the only way it can run is if my power cable is plugged in. The battery is pretty much dead :/Is there any solutions to this? Considering I bought it in the UK and now live in the US
your battery is most likely dead and in need of replacement. 2-3 years on a battery is about the life span of a rechargeable battery. you should be able to get a new battery very easily.
Q: Where can I find a power cable for an HP Photosmart C3180 printer?
I'm in the same boat you are - except I have a #6310. I was foolish enough to go ahead and buy an HP printer when friends warned me against it (supposedly, only Lexmark is worse). Having said this, I am checking the cables on my printer at this moment. I honestly believe that their location and duties are similar (but not exactly the same) on all HP printers. This is what I see: 1. All of the cables are in the rear left-hand corner; 2. They are in the following order: USB cable (light grey or beige in color) with the trident sign. If this is not clear, go to any search box - Yahoo would be good - and enter USB cable picture; or go to USB Cable and Wikipedia. 3. Immediately to its right is what I believe to be the power cable (black with white or yellow dots on the cable itself). On some models there is actually a green light on the plug-in part. GOOD LUCK!
Q: NE1 have a surge protector and power filter for there home theatre stuff? If so what is the model and did it make a difference? I have RF grounding problem through my cable and was wondering if the moster cable boxes would help clean up the signal. I have to wrap a wire around the coax cable and ground it to something to make SOME not all of the noise dissappear. (lines rising from bottom to top of picture) Obviously I want a more definate and permant solution. Thanks.
Actually, any decent power conditioner with a separate ground may work, but it may not and it could be way overkill for your issue. What you need to do is put a ground block in the cable line and ground it to your main utility ground. This involves some skill and special tools and there is a risk of electrocution if you don't know what you are doing. Any decent cable or satellite guy would do this in 10 minutes or so for $20 including the ground block and ground wire. Don't let them add a second ground (like a ground rod) or ground to a water pipe because it's wrong and dangerous. Just tell them it has to go to the main utility ground. (while you can ground to the water main if you know what you are doing, most installers don't) Another suggestion is make sure all of your electrical components that connect to that TV are on the same electric circuit. If some are on one circuit and others on another there could be an imbalance in the ground.
Q: I'm new to PCs and I recently bought a Dell Optiplex 745 desktop PC but it came without cables. I thought I had the correct power cord but it turns out I gave it away to friends. I have the power cable that you plug into the wall which has the standard PC kettle plug (the correct one for PCs not an actual kettle plug) that you'd usually plug into an adapter then into your PC but I'm not sure if you can just plug it in without the correct adapter. I have Googled but cant make head nor tail of it all. And by adapter I mean the cable with the little box that you usually plug into a device such as a PC, laptop or Xbox 360 before you connect the cable to the mains.Thanks.
It all comes down to the amount of output that the pc is set to take. I would think that you would be fine without the adapter, assuming it already works. If you do decide to do this make sure you set up a surge protector, dont just plug it into the wall. A power surge could fry the internals and brick the pc.
