- Q:i have to do a science fair project and thought it would be cool to make a solar powered vw bus. i have 2 6volt solar panels to power a dc motor that works off of 9v 2v or 8v. i also bought a 2nd motor because the first wasnt workin for us. this one is a 3v motor. ive had them in the sun but they wont work. please help, thanks
- A 2V battery designed for a current max of 200mA, can turn on a 2W lamp. If you want to turn on a 2V 200Watt lamp, you need a bigger battery capable of providing 6 amps!! Similarly the solar panel you have can produce a voltage, but when connected to a motor, the voltage might drop to much lesser value!! So apart from voltage you also need to know current taken by motor. Further, motors have a habit of not starting, but once prodded (mechanically rotate the shaft with hand), they may run. If you are in that border area, give a turn to the motor and see.

- Solar panels can be worth it but it is more complex issue than that. It will always be more efficient to add insulation, change to high efficiency lights, more efficient appliances, etc, first to try and save energy. However, if you have done all of that and you have a south facing area whee they could be mounted and you live in an area with a decent amount of sun, then they could pay off. I have no experience myself with Solar City, but I know from word of mouth they are good. I can recommend from first hand experience REC Solar. I have 20 of their panels on my south facing roof. They have a leasing deal or a deal where you buy the system outright (which is what I did) but for less than you might think. I'd be glad to help you if you had any other questions.
- Q:Ok, so I've been having much success with the joule thief circuit and a LED, but i tried hooking it up to a small solar panel that can put out 2.5v on it's own, and can light up a white LED dimly by it self to the joule thief and it will not work ....my question is why? A SMALL solar panel will only produce a small amount of power (watts) your joule thief circuit wont help because as you draw more current from the solar panel the voltage will drop; and your joule thief circuit just reduces the efficiency of the whole system Try adding another solar cell in series to get more voltage and more power.

- I live near a community in Mexico where hey have no power. It is in the desert and is perfect for solar because they only have 3-4 in. rain a year. It is on the beach so many wealthy have homes there that are on solar systems. I have helped my friends set up and work on many of them. Solar systems WILL NOT normally support air conditioning unless you install a gas powered ammonia or lithium Bromide system. In these systems the refrigeration cycle heat is supplied by the gas instead of a compressor, so the only electrical power is a small circulation pump which will not drain batteries fast. These are a problem in some areas because not many people know how to maintain and repair this type of system. Some of my friends claim they can run a very small one room AC on their solar systems just to at least have a place to sleep that is cool. Others say it is questionable. Please understand these systems are not cheap. Most of them paid $20,000 - $35,000 and even more if you use the ammonia cycle AC. The systems usually have 0-2 panels, a 0-5 KW gas generator, and large bank of large batteries like ones you use in a golf cart or bigger. I also must apologize to all the environmentalists for the inconvenient truth.
