- Q: i am doing this investigatory project about different kinds of windows and im testing the difference between glass and plastic windows and i found that plastic windows make the room hotter than glass windows. Why is this so? what is in both these materials that causes this result? what are they made of and what contributes to this result? please help me. i need this by tomorrow!!!:(
- It has to do with how well the material conducts energy. Plastic is probably a better insulator which means it does not transfer energy well. Glass is also an insulator but maybe it isn't as good of an insulator. Try doing more research on the conductive/heat transfer properties of glass vs. plastic.
- Q: how do you change the plastic rear window in a miata?
- You can find directions on this at OKorder
- Q: I don't know what they mean by 'apply tape to bottom of protruding sill.' I have a sill, do they mean on the surface of it, or below the sill on the wall, or should i just put the tape around the window and apply the plastic, just not sure how to handle the sill...thanks...
- Having used this stuff myself, I've learned that the weak point in the system is the adhesive strength of the tape. Since the plastic will be stretched, it will be pulling constantly against the tape, so having the plastic go around edges before taping helps to reduce the force against the tape. In other words, instead of putting the tape along the inside edges of the molding, or even on the face, I wrap the plastic across the face of the molding and attach the tape along the outside edges of the molding, where it meets the wall. With the plastic going around a 90-degree bend, it helps relieve stress on that adhesive. At the sill, I put the tape on the bottom of the sill -- not the face of it, but the underside. That's what has worked best for me. The tape holds, and the plastic stays in place.
- Q: my friends tagged my jeep like last may for the end of skool with window chalk... i got the stuff on the front and body off but the plastic windows left a light but noticeable stain... and they just tagged it again for the start of skool and im having a real hard time getting this one off is there a trick or something to buy to get this stuff off... o yea and i have a tear in my jeep window is there a way to fix that without tape like melting it back together or some waterproof glue Solution
- you can try paint thinner on a rag .....not sure if it will take the stain out of the plastic or not but it should get the chalk off without a problem. not sure what to tell you about the rip in the window tho....sorry. hope the paint thinner works for you, just use caution cause the thinner is a harsh chemical. good luck. it might burn ur skin a little but wash with soap and water afterwards....your skin and the window to play it safe.
- Q: this geo metro is a 92 4door hatchback and window is in the hatch and I am looking for new window molding to go around this window. If anyone know just put me in the right direction.
- Depends what part you mean by plastic window moulding. The rubber stuff that's like a soft bumper is called weather stripping--you can pick that up at any auto parts store. If you mean the small piece of plastic that goes around the edge of the window itself--that comes with the window. The only way to make it look professional is to replace the window. Or at a minimum take the window out, strip the old stuff then replace it with new. An auto glass repair shop is the best place to talk to them about that. If you mean a plastic trim piece inside the car you can try a chevy dealer but it might be difficult to find parts for that model as it hasn't been made in about 15 years. Then you're stuck calling around to junk yards. Sorry, sorry, the new P.C. term is salvage lots.
- Q: will any type of plastic work for insulating windows?
- I would suggest the type that are like storm windows. They are double layers and create dead air spaces that stop the heat flow -- not much of an R value, but better than thin plastic sheeting. R= 1 (for the really cold days, the best insulation for windows is to cut a 1 inch thick foil faced styrofoam sheet - cut it to size so that it pressure fits inside your window framing. = R = 6.5
- Q: I have a 1999 Sebring Convertible and I am desperately in need of a new top. Is it possible to get a plastic window with the top or no because I already have a convertible top with a glass window? Thanks!
- No due to plastic and glass in combination will over heat and melt. You can ask the car dealership or use paper wrapping over windows such as a moon or sun roof rather than plastic to glass.
- Q: Our landlord is obsessed with everything looking the same, but people here want to put up their own window treatments. What are tenant rights in this situation?
- You may be stuck. Typically, landlord want a uniform look on the exterior of their units. That doesn't mean, however, that you can't hang your own window treatments on the inside of your apartment. Sometimes simple drapery panels from a rod will divert the eye from blinds. You could even hang a 'sheer' panel or two with draperies on top via a 'double' rod. This would help minimize the blinds further. Many retailers sell cost effective 'ready-made' curtain panels with tab-tops, rod pockets, etc. which are simple to hang and look expensive.
- Q: State why plastic window frames need no painting or maintence?????
- because they are plastic. wow, that should be obvious. .
- Q: does tapeing plastic over windows help very much in winter?
- It does help somewhat. When you seal a window like that, you're creating an area of dead air (non-circulating) which does help slow down heat transfer. It's like the pockets of air in an insulated jacket or in fiberglass insulation. It also seals up any gaps and leaks in the window itself. I find that to really reduce the heat loss through a window, I use plastic on the inside and the outside and use a heavy material as a curtain. Between the three, I don't feel the chill from around the windows. @Boy Boy - That's what my Central Heating system is designed to do. It has an air-exchanger that trades the stale inside air with the outside air AND has a heat exchanger to take the heat from the air going out to pre-warm the heat coming in to the house. Even without that, homes leak enough air to not develop mold. We're not talking making a hermetic seal here. Every time the doors open you get a significant air exchange. And that's not even mentioning all the office and commercial buildings that do not have windows that open. They have sealed, double and sometimes triple pane windows filled with inert gases. They don't get mold. Mold in the winter develops on areas where condensation on the walls forms. And if you have condensation forming in the house on an exterior wall, then there is usually a lack or a failure of the insulation in that area that needs to be addressed. Before you call someone an idiot, make sure that they're actually doing something idiotic.
