Q:Can you get an electrick sock when you slum the door of your car and touching the rubber/plastic where the window holds on to? isn't plastic an islulator?
It called static, and it's caused by YOU.
Q:I really ought to have asked this yesterday. How can I help my plastic-and-duct-tape car window survive a torrential downpour/thunderstorm??? It's the front, passenger-side window, and I can't get the glass replaced until Wednesday. :S What can I do???
Duct tape is not worth the paper the bill is printed on. Try to keep it in a garage or put a tarp over it until Wednesday.
Q:I need to mask some windows off using just painters plastic and 2quot; tape. My problem is where I'm supose to lay the tape is flush with the glass. Am I supose to cut the plastic to size, tape up the corners and then tape seams? Sorry, new to airless.
You got it Tape windows first, use a razor knife for corners. Now tape plastic to the tape on windows. Cut plastic smaller then window so you tape on tape.
Q:I am talking about the stuff you tape to the inside of your home windows and use a hair dryer to stretch it tight. It is supposed to keep single pane windows better at keeping in the heat. I live where it gets 30 degrees at night and 40-50 during the day in winter. Does anyone have experience with these products? Which type works best? Mainly, does it really keep heat in? OR does it keep sunlight heat out and balance out to zero help?
Yes it can make a HUGE difference. In college, I lived in an old drafty house with 6 other friends. Our heating bills were astronomical and you could literally feel the wind blowing through the windows! We shrink-wrapped the windows and immediately noticed a change in the temperature in the rooms. Our heating bills dropped by 30% over one month. Windows typically account for 10-20% of the heat loss in a house. Even if you have double-pane windows, they still get cold, leeching heat out of your room. The plastic sheeting will help by creating a partial vacuum between the window and the plastic which acts as an insulator (this is the same principle those old metal glass thermos bottles use.) This helps keep the heat in, and the cold out. Sunlight still passes through, but not the heat from the sun. That's mostly blocked by the vacuum between the plastic and the window. Double pane windows do most the same thing - only the space between the panes is filled with Argon gas, which is a poor conductor of heat and cold. The only downside is that the sticky tape these kits use may damage paint when removed - assuming you can remove the tape at all. You'll also need to purchase a new sheets for each window each year. Other alternatives include making sure there are no holes or cracks around your window frames. Use a caulk gun to fix these problems, just don't caulk the windows shut! :-) Caulk guns are cheap, and you don't need an expensive tube of caulk - even the $0.99 tubes of painter's caulk will do the job. (it also work wonders against keeping bugs out of your house, but that's for another time.) Covering the windows with heavy drapes will also help, but isn't as effective as the plastic sheeting. However, every little bit can help. Drapes also help in the summer by helping keep heat out of your house.
Q:its like recycling plastic into paper use
You know the plastic window you find on envelopes? Wipe that gently with acetone (nail polish remover), it will become white and opaque and will actually hold ink. The problem with converting plastic to paper use is that most plastics do not hold inks very well. The transparencies that one can print on (using laser printers) uses heat to bond powder onto the plastic. If you try to use an ink-jet printer on transparencies, because of the inherent smoothness of plastic, the ink lays on top of the plastic and can be smudged. The little trick with the plastic window and acetone is that the acetone partially dissolves the polystyrene window and makes it more permeable to inks. Ultimately, it is not technology that is the problem, it is costs (and legislation).
Q:97 Wrangler soft top. I scratched the plastic up and would like to polish it out. Any tips?
I've had some luck with Meguiars Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish, if the scratches are not too deep.
Q:out of envelopes before you put it in your paper recycles or do you leave it in? This bugs me EVERY week, lol. Who does this and who doesn't . Anyone know how they deal with the plastic. ?
You're supposed to break them out because it's not possible for them to mechanically sort them out. Some recyclers will chop it up into flakes which can then be sorted but that brings it's own problems.
Q:Im looking at buying this jeep, The problem is it has those plastic zip down windows, instead of glass roll ups.can I buy glass windows for it? or would I actually have to buy completely new doors with roll up windows.cuz its gonna b a serious pain n the *** to unzip the windows!
If you want glass in the doors, you will have to buy the full doors. You will also need the surronds for full doors and a soft top. Stick with the half doors. Its not a big problem. The alternative is expensive to switch out. Check around your local junk yard for the swap, and you will save money.
Q:Do I have to replace the entire convertible or can the plastic be replaced?
you can have the plastic replaced - i had it happen to me, it faded to yellow and was just plain ugly. either take it to the benz store and have them take care of it - or go to a good upholstery shop and have them replace it. so, yes it is very easily done.
Q:It is a clean tear- about 2 inches. I was wondering if there is anything I can use to glue it back together, or if a mechanic/garage would be able to fix it?
THIS IS ASSUMING YOU MEAN THE HALF TOP PLASTIC WINDOWS ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS, BUT IT ALSO WORKS ON THE REARS TOO. GO TO A POOL SUPPLY STORE (YES POOL SUPPLY) AND GET A LINER PATCH. THEY COME IN CLEAR MATERIAL, AND THE BEST THING IS, IT'S WATERPROOF!! (USED ON POOLS) NAD IF YOU ARE VERY CAREFUL WHEN APPLYING THE SEALANT, IT LOOKS LIKE A FUZZY SPOT ON THE WINDOW.
