- Q: My dad layed tiles in his kitchen recently. He had some plywood type stuff that he layed them on top of so they are on a flat, even surface. But then someone told him he should have put a netting type stuff underneith the tiles too, to keep them from breaking. Is that very important, will his floor be ruined now?
- Its called wire mesh. Its not used as much anymore. What makes tiles or grout crack is the wood below the tiles. If the floor joists are too far apart and the plywood is not thick enough it can cause the floor to move. Even a little bit of movement can cause the tiles and the grout to crack. The wire mesh will not help if the floor moves.
- Q: I have an on going problem in my kitchen. Same time tile floor was done in our home but kitchen is the problem. It was done 3-4 years ago by a contractor, however he never showed up his face to help us. He left some grout with us and said if ever the grout pops up then we can mix it in the water and fill with this mixture. The grout from the kitchen floor always comes out. Underneath, the kitchen is wood floor. The kitchen is on the second floor. Our family room is also on the second level but no problem to that floor Please help.

- If its the honey or green onyx in the lower pictures, to answer your question, it is for wall application only, not durable enough for flooring. - Q: self stick floor tile, vapor barrier
- Staple the Luan over the tile make sure you use alot of staples to make sure your floor doesn't give at all and use liquid nails adhesive to help hold the Luan down. Also make sure no staples are sticking up because that would damage the floor tile. Then use a primer to paint on the luan to help the adhesive stick. I would also reccomend using addional adhesive. The adhesive on the back of the tile doesn't hold up very well. Spread vinyl floor tile adhesive over the floor and once it is tacky put your floor down. Make sure to let the floor acclimate to the room at least 48 hrs before installation. After you lay the floor it needs to be rolled with a 100lb. roller.
- Q: I am installing 4x4 ceramic tiles on a shower wall. I have been using a 1/4 x 1/4 sq. notch trowel, but am having trouble with the tiles staying put...should I use a 3/16 x 5/32 v-notch trowel instead?
- When I use a trowel I use a V-notched trowel spreasding adhesive in a figure 8 configuration all over the walls, I use a trowel with 5/16th's groove.
- Q: I just finished laying tile in my shower. How long do I need to wait before I grout? If it makes any difference they are simple 4 inch white tiles.Also, just out of curiosity, I was told I needed to spread the adhesive on the wall and place the tiles over that. It seems like it would have been easier to apply the adhesive to the back of the tiles. Especially the last few tiles. Does this make any difference?
- if it's a shower.spread the adhisive on the wall.it helps to water proof that material that you have on the wall.as for the floor you can grout a few hours later.the floor should be put down after the wall.if you did it already ver it with plastic and tape.when you tile and grout the wall.it will mess the floor up.good luck.
- Q: after grouting a new tile floor (about 400 sq ft) and several moppings the finish is still somewhat dull. how do i clean the tile to bring back a nice glossy finish? Thanks
- Mopping isn't the proper technique, you need to get down on you hands and knees with a sponge. If the tile has a haze hardened onto it, you may need to use a nylon scrubber pad or tile grout scrubber on the tile surface, or if it's really set on, they make a haze remover just for the purpose.
- Q: Do I start in the middle like normal tile? What happens if I don‘t start in the middle due to the uneven wall?
- Peel and stick tile can be good depending on the surface your sticking it to. The last time I did peel and stick I had an old basement floor with tile that was 40 years old. I cleaned all the old tile, sealed it and the peal and stick tile worked great! One thing about peel and stick tile is that its vinal and will Sink into any inperfections in the floor several weeks after its initially put down. For example, lets say you go over an old tile floor and there is a small gap between the old tiles. The floor will look great when you install it, but in several weeks the gap in the old tiles will start to show. Also if your installing it on plywood, make sure the floor does not move when you walk accross it. If the floor moves in any way, the tiles will start to come up or crack. As far as where to start, its more of a visual thing. Just lay the tiles out first and do a little measuring so when you get to a wall you don't have a tile that is 2 inches or looks out of place

- Q: IAM REDOING MY KITCHEN FLOOR. IS PEEL STICK TILE GOOD FOR THE PROJECT N WILL IT LAST? THANKS
- For most things, in general, you get what you pay for. If you buy the peel and stick tile because it is cheap, then you will have a cheap job. It never sticks as good as the manufacturer says it does. It shows ALL imperfections in the underlying floor surface. You will get goop in the areas between tiles, no matter how well you lay it. It really isn't worth it at all. I did a bathroom and kitchen area in an old house using peel stick tile, and it looked good for about a month, then it turned to crap quickly. I'd suggest either using ceramic tile or a single sheet of linoleum flooring. Good luck.
