- Q:I am in the process of tiling my bathroom, now that I have the 12 X 12 tiles on the floor and nearly done with them, I need to do the walls behind the toilet sink and cabinet. My question is, how far do I have to move the toilet flange (pipe) forward so the new tiles will not interfere. The toilet sits right on the wall. I used 1/2 backerboard, and I am using a 4x4 tile and thinset to mix and hold it together.
- If you removed the drywall and installed the cement board then add the thickness of the tile plus 1/4 inch for the thin set. If you put the cement board over the drywall then and in the 1/2 inch into your total. It's not a bad idea to give it a little extra room behind the toilet. You don't really want the tank right up against the tiles anyway. All it takes is somebody to lean back on that tank and crack a tile .Give it an extra 1/4 inch. Bottom line the toilet flange should be 12 inches from the finished wall by code. Don't forget to use a thicker wax ring or a flange extension when you reset that toilet to make up the difference of the cement board and tile.

- I ve worked with tiles for over 20 years and I find no difference in tiles from different areas such a Italian , Indian .USA, Brazil, China etc. They all have excellent and garbage tiles. The vitrified tiles is a type of tile as is ceramic and porcelains. Usually a bit harder bodied and the the sizing is better on vitrified tiles. Get what coloring and style fits your needs. - All I can say is: its probably not a great idea to put it right on top. It becomes more likely for it to come up. And then the process of taking up a layer of laminate and a layer of ceramic tile would be that much harder when it came about. I think the only way to make that work without taking up the ceramic tile is to make an air tight seal between the 2. I couldn't give you any ideas on how to do that though.
- Q:well I burned a small hole in a linoleum tile. How do I fix it?
- You can remove a single tile with the aid of heat. There is a tool called a heat gun that looks like a hand-held hair dryer that will serve this purpose. You can purchase or rent them. You may try a hair dryer first. The heat softens the tile and adhesive. I would also carefully cut several slits in the tile and use a putty knife/scraper to remove it in pieces. Once removed, scrape the remaining adhesive away and then dry fit the replacement tile to check for fit , level and smoothness. Then apply tile adhesive and weigh it down for 24 hrs. You may also attempt to patch the hole if you have a matching replacement tile [or can cut a section from under a cabinet or appliance. 1) cut a shape around the hole that will best match the pattern in the tile; cut a patch from the replacement linoleum. 2) fill the area with a matching epoxy. You might try to grind some small shavings from a replacement tile and mix with a bit of clear epoxy to fill the hole. Sand smooth after the epoxy dries. Obtain a glossy topcoat with a bit of clear nail polish.

- The answer to your question is NO...The reason is that you would end up with cracking tiles and lifting. Not to mention that the cement won't stick long term. You can rent a tile remover for little cost if you are willing to put in a weekend of sweat equity. It sure beats spending thousands on a contractor to do it.
