- Q: I‘m gutting my bathroom and will be tiling the floor and then adding a new vanity and a new toilet.The question is, do you tile before you put in the toilet and new vanity or do you put in these items first and then tile around them? Concrete slab foundation that I‘m currently working on leveling.
- I would suggest paying a contractor because there are many things that can go wrong. ...sub floor has bounce, so tiles don't stay down, grout cracks, putting a toilet over tiles (you need to lift the toilet, and reset it after the tiles are laid. You will also need to cut the tiles around the ABS and that can be a bit difficult too.) then the toilet can still leak causing damage. But if you are a good DIYer, then go to Home Depot or Rona and take a seminar.

- Q: For a while now I have just used paper towels as a substrate for my 2 leopard geckos and I recently have been researching slate tiles as a substrate and I want to give it a try due to the positive feedback i‘ve seen on message boards and care sheets. Now, I have 2 10 gallon tanks that I would like to use but details are lacking from an online source.1. What measurements should i ask for when getting a piece of slate cut(for a generic 10 gallon tank)?2. Is there a certain thickness the slate should be for proper heat disbursement?3. How warm should the slate be allowed to get if i‘m monitoring it with a thermometer? I know I could measure out the tank myself, but I was just curious if there was a size that fit better than what a measurement would give me. Thank you for the feedback.
- I use slate tiles for my 3 geckos tanks. They work great. 1. A 10 gallon tank is generally 20in X 12in. Because not all the tiles are the same size I would go with cutting the tile slightly smaller to make sure they fit. So maybe 19 1/2 and 11 1/2. You will probably need 2 tiles for each tank so you could cut them anyway you want ( 10 and 10, 12 and 8, 6 and 6, etc. You can fill the gaps with sand later on. The 12 X12 tiles could be slightly smaller, slightly larger, or longer then they say. 2. No really, though you do want them to be fairly even in the tank. Most of my tiles are about 1/4 inch but I also have a layer of sand under the tiles so they are level even if the tiles are different thicknesses. 3. You want them to be warm but not too hot. Because leopard geckos use belly heat you'll want them about 88-90F. I would not let the tiles get over 95F though.

- You need to put down rock board before the tile, unless it is a cement floor then you need to make sure it is clean and level. If it isn't level you can purchase some leveling material to pour and smooth over the floor. As for hardwood? There is an underlayment for hardwood, you can use the manufacturers product or just use 30lb felt paper (roofing felt)

- Which tile is it? porcelain or ceramic?? they are 110% different Porcelain tile you need to get a VERY high quality diamond/tunstencarbide drill bit/ holesaw. if it a small hole you need to drill then a simple glass bit will work, but use plenty of water For ceramic tile a a big hardware store sell an inexpensive holesaw for the larger holes and a glass bit will work fine on smaller holes

- Oooh! Oooh! I saw something about this last weekend on the DIY channel, and I plan on doing it, myself, in our kitchen, too! I scribbled notes while I watched--here's what I've got: Measure the space for the backsplash. If you are tiling over an uneven surface (like over old tile) you will have to create a smooth surface over what you have. To do that, you will need to install some trim to the uneven surface of the wall for studding to provide a place to affix backer board, and then affix backer board over that trim. That will give you an even surface for your new tile. I don't have notes on thype of wood or measurements for that studding, but if you ask at your hardware store, which is what I will need to do, I'm sure they can guide on that. You fasten the studding to the wall along the top and the bottom of your area to be tiled, and then in between those top and bottom studs at intervals sufficient to support your backer board without buckling when you press on it. Maybe the hardware store can advise on that distance, or you can just test it as you go. You fasten the studs to the wall with a nail gun, and then the backer board to the studs with a nail gun. Now you've got a new surface. Next, spread your plaster onto the backer board. I'm assuming you are buying your new tiles in sheets. Set your sheets of tile onto the plaster (don't remove the fronting paper from the tiles yet), starting in the center/bottom and working out, and up. When the tile is set, use a damp sponge to wet the fronting paper and peel that off gently. Now mix your grout, and apply that over the tile with a trowel. Wipe excess group from the tile faces, but be sure not to wipe away from between the tiles. You are finished! Luckily, the space for my backsplash is a rectangle without any oddly shaped areas besides that. I know I can do this, with some advice from the people at my hardware store. Hey: We can DO this!!!!
