I don't have the orig hardware for it and would like to know how to do this.: So are you asking how to reupholster the back of a small chair? Cut a piece of fabric at least 6 bigger on all sides, get a piece of batting 1/2 smaller all around than the area being covered and a staple or glue gun. Put the batting on the area to be covered, cover it in the fabric and pull the fabric to the back, securing with staples and or glue. Standard upholstery. Other wise, make a pillow the right size and shape and then tie it in place. I would add more detail to the question, maybe a pic of the chair?

They generally are only guaranteed for maybe 2 years. A better alternative would be to look for a second user branded office chair on sites like Ebay and Craigslist. Look for seats from companies like Herman Miller, Steelcase, Knoll or HAG. If you find something try and establish how much use it has had, you don't want something that's had a lot of hammer. With that said most of these makers guarantee their products for 10 years or more, so they are built to last.

So what would I need to do to strip off the remaining finish and paint it so that it will look good for a long time?Thanks in advance!: if you are painting it, you do not need to strip it. sand every spot that is worn, spot prime the bare wood, fill all low spots with plastic wood or ready patch, sand when dry, spot prime the patched areas, prime the whole surface of the chair, sand the whole chair with steel wool, wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove all steel hairs, then spray the last coat on with an hvlp sprayer. u may recoat, or clear coat to add protection with out further sanding... i would use an oil base primer and top coat
