Nope. There are basically two types of phones and service- GSM and CDMA. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA, while Cingular and T-Mobile are GSM. The phones are entirely incompatible. If you have another carrier, you can tell the difference in service by knowing if your phone takes a SIM card. A SIM card is used in GSM phones. Also GSM is more of a world wide standard, so if you travel it may be a better type of phone/service to choose.

Q:I have a t-mobile cell phone and since I returned home from vacation Sunday, I have noticed that my phone now says ATT as its service, not 'T-mobile.' I haven't done anything to my phone, and have no idea why this is happening! A few of my friends who live next door also have T-mobile and have the same thing happening. What's even more odd is we have far better service now (even though ATT has horrible service in this area- New York's Hudson Valley).Any idea as to why this is may be occurring?

It just means you're connecting to an ATT tower instead of to a T-Mobile one. Sometimes that happens because there's an issue with the T-Mobile tower and your phone can't connect to it. (Like if they're working on it right then or it's just busted, which seems to happen often.) If it's giving you better service, that's awesome, so don't bother to ask T-Mobile to put you back on their towers (tech support can do that I think). Roaming on other towers is included on T-Mobile so it's not going to affect your bill at all.

All T-Mobile phones are ridiculously slow and lag, not to be negative lol just honest. There isn't one phone I would recommend on the T-Mobile network as a very displeased T-Mobile costumer who has gone through MANY phones. I would recommend a Samsung Galaxy s3 on Sprint, or an iPhone 4s on Verizon as your best options.

I think you can take your own mobile phone and purchase a SIM card there. At least you can do that in Asia.

But he is unable to use it cuz of the american sim. He wasnt even able to put his existing sim into it to make it work. Why would anyone send a phone to Nigeria? Phones in Nigeria are less than half the price as in Europe or the US due to local purchasing power. In fact, there are companies in the UK importing phones from Nigeria because they are so cheap and reselling them. You can get a basic mobile phone without a camera for less than US5$, and even one with a camera can be bought for about US20-25$. You are going to pay much more for the phone and shipping from the US than the same phone can be bought in Nigeria. There is no need to buy a phone for someone in Nigeria, they can buy a phone for less than what it costs to go online at an internet cafe for 3 hours. You should be asking him to send you a phone since he can probably get the same model for half of what you would pay

I have found that the best value mobile phones are the prepaid deals. You obviously get a prepaid card with it, which may be what you want. If it isn't, then you can use it up and then just use your previous sim card (if you had one), as you usually would. There are some good Nokia phones for $99. They can be found at Telstra Shops, Woolworths, Big W, Harvey Norman.just to name a few locations. Goodluck. I have been in the same situation and found this to the best option.
