- Q: I am trying to change the electrical box to a ceiling fan box. House built in 1959. 4 wires are in the old box 4 white wires are sodered together from 3 of the wires. And one white and 3 black wires are sodered together. I can't take the box out until I cut the wires. What do I do after that? I have a picture I can send.
- Hire an electrician and expect that the wiring needs an overhaul and the ceiling and maybe the walls will need to opened enough to replace several wires. This is the minimum to do what you intend. The other choice is to leave it alone. Unless this is a heavy ceiling fan (+ 6 lbs) the existing box may be sufficient for the fan.
- Q: Hello We have been running a room heater and humidifier from a bedroom wall electrical outlet for the last 4-5 months with no issue.2 days ago we noticed a burning/melting plastic smell when we ran the appliances for 10-15 mins. I checked the wall outlet after removing its cover and visually looks OK i.e. no blackening. I have not removed the actual sockets. Also, the appliances themselves seem to be OK i.e. no smell from them.Could the issue be in the wiring inside a wall? How to determine this? The smell seems to starts when we use this particular outlet only.If problem is not in outlet, then will the wall need to be broken into to determine the source of the problem? Is there a more sophisticated solution? What could have caused this sudden issue? A rodent? Water leakage thru the siding? Other ideas?Note that the circuit breakers have not tripped during this time to indicate overload etc. Thanks in advance for your opinions.Homeowner_ne
- The multi-outlet plug thing is called and octopus outlet. The 59 cent outlet you get at the DIY store is rated for 15 Amps. The 12 Gauge wire is rate for 20 Amps, and a good thing it is. Don't buy any 15 Amp outlet that allows you to strip the wire and shove it into a hole in the back. Only bend the wire and put it under the screw. A good mechanical contact is a good electrical contact. Spend about $5 and get the 20Amp outlet. Stop using the octopus outlet because if the fire started while you were out of the house, good bye house.
- Q: have a clifford alarm/remote starter and it completely doesn't work. if it is taken out, will it possibly mess up my electrical wires and cause my car to be messed up since the wires in a car are touchy? the alarm was already installed by the previous owner when i bought the car and i have the papers of how he wired it
- It could mess things up. If you are not familiar with how they are installed, I would take it to someone who can remove it for you.
- Q: I am also concerned that the electrical wires have been stapled down with metal staples, can the heat burn through the wire insulation and short out the wires? Last year I was in the attic on a hot day and the wires were almost too hot to touch. I've installed ventilation this year and I want to find a target temp, it's common for the temperature outside to be in the 90s where I live.
- Don't worry about the wires. The wire coating will sustain temps up in the 400 degree range. I recently installed (2) powered roof vent fans on a roof for a customer. These fans actually suck out the hot attic air and bring in cooler air from the soffit vents. If you just installed gravity type roof vents you may want to add a power attic fan. Just remember you need a source for air to come into the attic. Ridge vent is almost worthless as it does constrict the air flow - I am not a big fan of Ridge vent. Hip roofs are harder to vent as there are no gables which means most of the hot attic air is trapped on the hip sides as there is not even a place for ridge vent except for a small portion of the top ridge board.
- Q: I have a halogen heater and one of the bulbs in it started flickering so I opened it up disconnected that bulb and found the casing around one of the wires connecting to it was burned off. So I have this exposed wire which is not connected to anything and was thinking about just covering it with duct tape and using the heater again. Now im not stupid and everything about this to me sounds like a bad idea but would like to get a second opinion on exactly how dangerous it would be, it would only be temporary until I got a new heater.
- The bigger question is why is the casing (jacket insulation?) was burned off the wire. Such as, was the wire undersize, or was there a short in the wire? Sounds like your heater is a potential candidate for a product recall (unless mice chewed through the wire or something like that). I'd get online and search for recalls against your heater, and if nothing comes up, contact the manufacturer (they probably have an 800#). What may come of this for you is a new heater. Don't take a chance of a fire, especially when it comes to something that pulls that much power.
- Q: Hello! I have two exact same porch lights. I was moving one lamp to test location #2 (the other light turned out to be bad, just wanted to make sure power was ok) and I thought I wrote down which wires from the wall (outside on condo patio) went into the wires on the lamp but now I see I have FOUR wires coming from the walland only three for the lamp.I seem to have two white wires, or at least I cannot see any color outside of the grey paint from when the building was painted. The third is black and the last is green and I can see the color of those wires and I am sure they were connected to the ground and the power. Now, finally my question.do those two white wired go together with the white wire from the lamp? Please email me if you need further explanation or a picture of the wiring, Thank you so much for your help! I thought I had my bases covered but I dropped the ball!!
- The 2 white wires go together and connect to the white wire on the light fixture, the black to the black and the green to ground
- Q: I had a small infestation of mice in my garage a few years back. I noticed a hole under the breaker box that looks like it was from the mice. Is it likely that they chewed on the wiring or was this just an entry point? How would I know without tearing out the drywall or pulling all new wiring?
- Mice will chew on almost anything. I was on a job once - mice infested - noticed I was having trouble with my computer - my boss took the side plate off and mice had built a nest right inside - major parts had to be replaced. Mice are a menace! They are very hard to control - if there's one there's a 100 - they breed like rabbits. Try calling pest control or an electrician.
- Q: I heard someone at an energy conference refer to a study that showed that going to a one size thicker wire in a home -- I am assuming on the American wire gauge, AWG, system -- will lead to a significant drop in home electrical energy usage. I write significant because the percentage was so big I can't remember it exactly.
- In the case of a light bulb bigger wire will cause the same light bulb to use more power. Since the voltage drop to the light bulb would be greater with smaller wire, hence voltage at the bulb would be lower. PowerV^2/R would be less for a light bulb using smaller wire. The bulb would be dimmer with less voltage to it. With a heavily loaded motor the results would be different due to the effect of reduced voltage on the speed torque curve. I think the people who suggest that this would save energy are in the business of selling copper!
- Q: Hello,I'm attaching a 12/2 wire to a new light fixture. The fixture has the white, black, and bare wire. The 12/2 wire also has white, black and bare wire. I've connected them together using wire nuts and then electrical tape. But the instructions say this: Helpful Hint: Attach copper ground wire to grounded outlet box. What does this mean? There was a screw that says ground on the light fixture. Do I need to attach the wire to this screw, PLUS connect the 2 bare wires together? Or can I just connect the bare wires together only? Background info: This house was built in 1998 if that helps. Also, this project is simply replacing the light fixture in a closet that I've moved about 3 feet. Just a standard light, nothing fancy. Thanks!
- You did good with both grounds together. If its a metal box and the box is grounded (either by the bare wire clipped to the side or a grounding screw at the bottom. Or it could be grounded by the conduit being metal. If it's a plastic box the box is not grounded. In either case, just wrap one of the bare wires around the ground screw with the loose end long enough to wire nut the two bare wires together.
- Q: I am going through an apprenticeship program to become a journeyman but I am also going to school to become an electrical engineer and I was wondering if this apprenticeship program will help me while I am getting my electrical engineering degree, should I consider it as job experience or is it a waste of time? And I would really like to know what is the difference between an electrician and an electrical engineer? Does anyone know of any electric company's that hire interns or have apprenticeships for aspiring electrical engineers?
- In addition to what everyone else said here, electrical engineer's also design circuit boards, create code to run in Microcontrollers, design all of the test set hardware and software to test our circuits they design, design mangetics (transformers, inductors, etc.), build and test prototypes of elctronics.the list goes on and on. Just wanted to let you know that an electrical engineer's field of knowledge and applications to use it in is vast.
