- This furniture is a symbol of the simpler times that followed the first world war. Previously, American designers had copied European steamer chairs, or French bistro chairs. The first companies to manufacture metal gliders and swings were The J.R. Bedding Company, in Philadelphia and Howell Manufacturing, whose designs were a rage at the 1939 World Fair! One of the first designers to create a chair that was marketed to the masses was Viktor Schreckengost, an eclectic inventor also responsible for the design of metal children's pushcars and bicycles for the recently defunct Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company (A distant relative informed me recently that their family name, popular in western PA, means scary ghost!) His Beverly Hills model, sold through Sears Roebuck during WWII, can still be found across the country. Schreckengost designed the chair by offering a free drink to all 428 workers at the Murray plant in return for their participation in its creation. Each plant worker sat on the lid of a barrel layered with 8 inches of clay covered with plastic. The prototype was created, the first metal die-cut made, and when the war ended sales flourished. The joyous optimism of the nation was reflected in the c-0-0-0-l new color choices: red, lime, lavender, canary yellow and blue. It's lines were sleek and modern, much like the polished chrome and tubular steel evident in everything from baby buggies to mixmasters. Victor Just died this January

- Q: I used to always just take a towel to the beach and lying on the beach. but I always wanted to have a beach chair so I could sit and watch the ocean,read and enjoy and relax.I bought a little beach chair a few days ago and love it. Just I don't have a car and have to carry it. It has a bag though but it must be carried anyway.My mother says I just threw some money away. - I prefer the chair. I can sit up and see the water or recline and sleep. The surface of the chair is smooth instead of lumpy like the sand. My chair has a cup holder so I can put my drink in it and it doesn't get sand all over it. The chair is just much better overall. As long as you don't mind carrying the chair on the bus, it was not a waste of money.

- Q: I need to set up 'standard' chairs in various size circles. If I need only a few chairs (say less than 12), the circle is fairly easy to set up. But as the number increases beyond 20, to 30, 40, or more, the circle becomes increasingly less circular--that is, flat spots show up. For each person to be able to see every other person, flat spots are not good.
- The rope or string acts as a constant radius measurement. Just let out enough rope to make a big enough circle and then use it to position each chair. Some simple calculator math will even allow you to calculate the size of the circle. Width allowed for each chair times number of chairs is the circumference. That divided by 2 over pi will give you the radius i.e. the length of rope. - Q: Is there a certain age you have to be to get those chair massages that you find in the mall or at the chiropractor or something.Do those type of massages feel good?
- You may need parents permission to be treated at the Chiropractors. My daughter works for one and she massages all ages, from kids to the elderly. Chair massages are relaxing to a point, but laying on a table getting a massage is the most effective. Plus then it does the lower part of your body too.
- Q: She is almost 30 months old and she has only went potty on her chair like 4 times. She wants to wear panties but i tell her she cant unless she goes potty on her chair. I really dont like to bribe her but i tell her if she goes potty i will give her a sticker or something little like that. I dont know what else to do.

- Q: I have a large office chair that's oversized and comfortable. Probably very expensive to replace outright. It's of the type that uses a gas cylinder/shock absorber design. That's failed, and I'm wondering if it can be replaced economically. If so, would it be a do-it-yourself project?. Thanks.
- They don't usually make repair parts for those because it's so rare that anybody wants to repair one. You would have to buy a new chair to get the base, but if you do that you might as well just use the new chair.
- Q: Normally she was eating in her high chair. But recently I had a C-section and they said no lifting and she is 28 pounds. also, I think she is growing out of her high chair because she tries to stand up in it and rocks it and she can tip over. So, what do I do? Do I get her a booster seat? Does it have buckles? What do you recommend? Today I tried to feed her on the couch but it can be messy and she was running around with food in her hands.P.s. I have to hold my newborn often, so I have only 1 free hand if any.
