I think I like both majors and as far as I know Mechanical is the science of moving objects where you can get more hands-on experience , while electrical engineering is more imaginative. - I believe you grasp the essential intellectual difference between the two fields. In the study of both disciplines there are laboratories where you build things. In electrical labs you build circuits, and in mechanical labs you use lathes, drill presses and milling machines to build mechanical devices. When you are out of school and working, you will most likely not be doing anything hands on except inspecting equipment, systems and facilities. Your principal work will be analyzing, documenting, reporting and creating design/construction documents. I had an orientation to both fields (mechanical and electrical) as from the time I was about 13 I rebuilt engines in a machine shop and loved to build all sorts of mechanical things on a farm. But I also liked to design and build receivers, transmitters, amplifiers, etc. Ulitmately, I was attracted more to electrical engineering because it seemed more esoteric and mysterious; but I think I would have been happy and successful in both fields, and possibly even in structural engineering. These fields apply math and the other sciences, and require creativity to find ideal solutions. Civil engineering seemed too mundane to me.

- No, electrical engineering course is not one that will qualify you to be an electrician just as doing a nurse's course does not make you a doctor. This question is asked on a regular basis. The simple answer is that each state has its own electrician licensing laws. Some of these can be found by doing a Google search for electrician licensing laws in texas or whatever. In most states, having a degree with a major in electrical engineering will not be sufficient to allow you to legally do the work of a licensed electrician. Your degree will give you more knowledge of pure theory than an electrician needs, but doing a degree course will not have taught you how to use tools, how to terminate and install cables, how to select equipment and calculate cable sizes and how to perform inspection and testing procedures. Most importantly, your degree course will not have taught you the National Electrical Code and local codes.

I used to work in the Steel works as electrical engineer previously. Electrical Engineering is the backbone of engineering but there are many different career paths for an electrical engineer. All electrical engineer role will inevitably involve specifications, schematics and drawings which you will need to understand and be able to advise/instruct others to work in accordance with them. It will also most likely involve man management on projects as well as materials and other resources. Man management can include in-house labour or sub-contracted. The most important aspect of an electrical engineer's role is undoubtedly Heath Safety. This is critical in todays engineering environment. You can see electricity so it is very easy for accidents to occur and someone die when working in and around electrical services and equipment. This is not just electricians and the like, this can involve all trades / specialist services who work near live electrical conductors. So as electrical engineer, you would be responsible for others, ensuring work is carried out to a high level and safely. This means implementation and management of permit to work systems as well as management of adequate electrical testing regimes and cooperation and integration with other engineering disciplines such as mechanical, instrumentation and controls, etc. I have only briefly mentioned some things here but there are many, many other electrical career paths for an engineer. It is all gonna boil down to what you have an interest in and what excites you because when you have that, it doesnt feel like a job and it aint so bad having to join the rat race for the 10 -12 hours every day.
