You have no idea if its steam or a chemical reaction somewhere in the pipes. So, in an apt, if I were you, I would do my best to cover the drain so that steam' can't come up. Then I'd cover it more with a lot of blankets etc, and then I would close the door. I wouldn't re-enter until someone told me it was safe. Maybe you didn't use chemicals, but you share the building and the pipes. So someone did something. Or, its nothing. Better safe than sorry. I'd of course make the maintenance guy check it out ASAP. Make them. Someone I know didn't know better and mixed bleach with PineSol. There certainly was a chemical reaction which could have been worse. Call maintenance and make them come out. And if they give you the runaround, tell them the fire dept would be willing to come and bring their detectors to let you know what it is. (I used to live in an apt where the maintenance was overloaded and everything had to WAIT). Good luck.

Pedestal sink! Not only is it easy to keep clean and looks so modern and fresh, it will give your bathroom a special look all on its own. As for storage.... think about what you really need and keep it simple and functional. You have lots of options today with magazine racks, toilet paper pedestal stands, vertical cabinetry that conveniently fits in a corner, back-of-the-door hooks and such to create a functional bathroom without clunky storage. Q:I checked for a valve under the sink to see if it possibly wasn't open all the way but i did not see any valves. The cold water pressure is fine in the bathroom sink but hot water has been horrible since I moved in 7 months ago. Kitchen, and bathtub hot water pressure is just fine. The sink appeared to be newer if not brand new when I moved in. I live in the city, if that helps to know that I have city water and not well water. Please advise..I would love to be able to wash my hands with higher warm water pressureThanks in advance

Q:Help! The cleaning lady somehow disconnected the stopper in my bathroom sink from the lever that moves the stopper up and down. Now its in the down position, a sink full of water and I cant get the stopper out!!

Use a knife tip in the small ring around the stopper, to lift the stopper drain out the water without flooding your cabinet. Then you can crawl underneath the sink. Loosen the big nut at the back of the drain on the vertical pipe and re set the stopper inside the pipe as the other person has already mentioned. Or you can leave the stopper out until a plumber can help you.

Q:In my apartment my bathroom sink is having problems. Whenever i turn the water on the water collects in the sink of course. The problem is the sink takes a very long time to drain the water. My sink is draining the water but it takes a long time to drain i saw about 30 minutes to drain. What is wrong with my sink?

Call the landlord. It's his responsibility to take care of that for you.

Q:I recently removed a drain plug device for my upstair bathroom sink and removed the trap to clean out my girlfriends hair that clogs the drainage. Since, I have done this I am getting a sewage smell especially when I am running water. What can I do?

Make sure the trap is working properly. The trap needs to maintain water in order for it to stop venting up sewerage. if there is too much of a drop from the sink to the bottom of the trap it will siphon some of the water out of the trap leaving a air gap which will aspirate and vent up. unless there is something still in the sink or pipe before the trap causing the smell, the system is not vented or its not trapped properly. good luck

Q:My husband was installing our new bathroom vanity after recent flood damage and the cabinet was just a bit too wide to slide into the spot. So he decided instead of sanding the drywall down he just cut it out. Now I have a 2 inch large hole in the drywall all around the sink and the sink protrudes a bit into the drywall. Not a huge problem except that we have to put a back splash back up around the sink to replace the existing we took out and I have nothing to adhere it to. I was told to get the mesh drywall patch and joint compound and just patch it but the sink still protrudes and I have nothing to really secure the patch to. I cant pull the cabinet out either because he already hooked up the water lines/plumbing. Help!

A piece of wood like a shim or lathe slat 1/4 X width of hole +bit more. Drill a hole in the center of the wood and put a string through and tie into a not bigger than the hole, insert the piece of wood in the hole in the wall {trim down until it can fit but still want it little wider to stop against} and pull back on string until flat against the back of the wall. This is the backing you can use to patch the hole. You will need to hold it in place while applying first layer. Try to include the backing in patch work to hold. Good Luck

Q:I just remodeled my bathroom and the contracted crew installed a receptacle about 2 inches above my sink is that against code? From what I understand a receptacle has to be at least 18" from any water source. Can I keep the receptacle there or do I have to move it? The receptacle is GFCI and Im talking about Virginia, United States.

Bathroom receptacles are required to be on a dedicated 20 amp circuit [NEC 210.11(C)(3)] and be located within 3 feet of the outside edge of the sink basin [NEC 210.52(D)]. There is no minimum clearance requirements from a sink basin for a bathroom receptacle. While it is not recommended to place an outlet directly behind a sink, it is not a code violation.
