Q:We are considering slate floors for the bathroom remodel we are doing. Are they difficult to maintain and are they a good choice for the bathroom?
have slate floors in my bathroom-love them. they're pretty easy to keep clean. the guys that did the work are unbelievably messy, so after they were done with all of the other stuff, it took me forever to get the grout that they dropped all over the place up! but they are really pretty. another nice alternative is mexican terra cotta tile. you can find them wholesale at lots of places, but you have to seal them yourself. the beauty of tc tile is that you can tweak th ecolor by adding wood stain. i love the slate tiles, though.
Q:How did ocean floor mapping provide evidence for plate tectonics?
When they use a system to map the ocean floor.
Q:pergo flooring 6 yrs old wearing on ends of some panels.
It isn't clear what you are asking. The placing of the question mark makes it look as if you are asking if the floor has worn out. I haven't heard of laminate flooring wearing out, but it hasn't been in general use all that long. Wearing out says to me that the surface finish has worn through to the substrate. I don't know how the ends could wear out because you don't walk on the ends. If the ends or edges are swelling or lifting, that happens when they are exposed to moisture. The only fix is replacing the planks which are doing that.
Q:What should I do with solid wood flooring?
Solid wood flooring long insects may be the reason for the quality of substrate and glue, but off, so that insects can take advantage of, may also be the keel of wet water is too high and lead. I recommend using some insect repellent. Insects smell the smell after poisoning. With a contact agent and a mildew.
Q:What kind of surface preparation should I do and what kind of paint to paint over old floor tile? The tile are really stuck firm to the floor. Thanks,
I paint and tile, every day of my life, though never together. I have no doubt you'll get answers that offer suggestions about roughing up, grinding, priming, etc, even perhaps using garage floor strength paints. This is similar to a CAN I question, and with no disrespect my answer is always, certainly, but my additional thought is always, But you may be dissatisfied. BTW you can find hundreds of Q's in yahoo search here, related to yours. First of all, consider that tile is essentially glass, especially glazed, fired tile. If you've never run a fingernail over a piece of glass with paint on it, try it once. Consider then the outside chance that you experience a miracle. That miracle will still be on a Floor, which endures more abuse than any other surface in a home. Assume that you achieve some modest success, then someone drags a chair across the floor, and OOOPS happens. I'd advise two things, neither easy, or cheap. Remove the old, and determine a same or different floor type, OR install concrete backer board, or Ply, over the existing floor, and determine any alternatives. Steven Wolf
Q:The previous owner of my house painted the cement slab garage floor. Now the paint is peeling off and looks bad. I would like to seal the floor with an epoxy-based sealant. Can I seal over top of the paint, or do I need to have the paint sandblasted off first?
That is a pretty tough one to be honest. I have done some work in this industry and every situation can be a little different depending upon the surface of the concrete you are working on. Smooth concrete with little or no aggregate is a little easier than a surface with clearly visible aggregate/rock. For stripping, start with a commercial grade grinder with a wire brush attached. Don't grind through the concrete but take the old paint off. Using a leaf blower blow all old paint, dust, debris, etc, off. Next, using old rags wipe the ENTIRE area that paint/sealant is to be applied with Xylene (an industrial strength solvent) that is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. Wear gloves as Xylene can be absorbed through the skin and is toxic/carcinogenic. Use the heavy disposable type nitrile gloves as regular latex will deteriorate very quickly from the Xylene. Be certain concrete surface is CLEAN AND DRY. Apply and cure appropriate sealant/paint. There are countless varieties out there depending upon the surface, intended use, chemical and environmental exposure, etc. A word of warning and disclosure, most of the work I did was under the supervision of a foreman and we were fixing botched DIY jobs where average folks tried to seal, paint or surface garages, patios and decks. Often times the highest expense to the customer was the labor cost involved in removing what they tried to apply themselves. I would recommend getting a quote from a licensed contractor who works in the sealants and coating industry first. Make an educated decision from the potential cost of doing it yourself or paying someone who will do and stand by their work....If the paint/surface/sealant fails it will be their dime, not yours. I would go this route myself before doing my own garage and I have done this work in the past. Hope this helps and good luck!
Q:can you give me some tips so that new vinyl tile floor will adhere to old floor. new vinyl tiles are self stick type
Firstly. I do not like self stick tiles,,,yet they keep wanting me to lay them,,I get paid so I do it. I much prefer the more commercial type that is thicker and longer wearing and I apply my own brand of glue. If you are ''doubleing up it's important that the glue stick to the old tile. It need a good mop down and a good rinse and be perfectly dry when the new stuff goes down. Roughing up the old stuff with a rough sandpaper only make the new tiles harder to stick because there is not enough glue on the new to fill any voids on the old. So that suggestion from anyone is void.
Q:I want to redo my flooring, but the prices in the stores are ridiculous. I have a lot of loose stones in my driveway. Is there a way to scatter them evenly and glue them to the floor?
Laminate is 1/3 of the price it used to be....The Best value on a budget is Home Depot's..Allure,..vinyl flooring that looks like hardwood flooring, also looks like Tile//It Floats like Laminate..It's not glued down..Which in my opinion is a great idea.especially if you live in flood prone areas. In 20 years,..It's worn, or you're tired of it,..it' not glued down..You literally grab it , and pull it out, and start over.
Q:How to choose to strengthen the floor?
1, see the floor substrate with or without burrs, if the burr base material is poor, on the contrary like, 2, look at the surface can be used around the keys up, such as the surface of the traces of its wear resistance is not good. This method is simple to protect the law of the box boxing red cabbage Gu Ge greed only one application, package your satisfaction.
Q:I'm in the upstairs area of a building and when I lift weights the floors squeak horrindously. I'm only here for a few weeks and I'd like to know if there's a mat or something that I can put on the floor.
the reason why the floor squeaks is because the subfloor has come loose from the joists. You can add more screws to the the flooring in the loose spots, that usually does the trick. Tool Belt Diva
