- If you do not have a carpet down you and the floor is just the floor boards it is just that the floor nails they have used have become loose. Buy some new floor nails and hammer down the places it squeeks. You should be able to see where the old ones are and hammer next to those. (you need to hammer into the floor joists). Use a hole punch to ensure the nail head is not raised. If you have carpet down then you can still do this but finding the joists is hit and miss. Becarfull and think about what might be under the floor, pipes etc.... If you hammer where current nails are in you should be OK.

- Are you cleaning up paint spatters or a spill? Or are the floors painted and you want to return them to bare wood? What I found that works great on spatters and spills is a product called OOPS! It's made by the same company that makes Goo Gone, a remover for that pesky label glue. I bought mine at the local hardware store. It's got a funny smell but it's not terrible. Spray the offending spots and let the product soak for awhile. Then take a razor blade and gently scrape the spots. It may very well take more than one application and scraping to get the paint off. When you get down to the last little bit, take a soft brush and scrub the area and the OOPS! will pull the paint out of the grain in most cases. I've used this stuff to remove spatters from oak wainscoting and trim. It takes patience and a little work but it gets the job done. If you are dealing with painted floors, the only way to remove the paint is either use a stripper or a sander and then refinish. For most people, this is not a DIY job because floor sanding is tricky.

- I have installed most types of wood flooring including hardwood ,veneer, etc. whether glued, nailed or floating. Unless you live in a humid area or your bedroom is in the basement, I recommend you get flooring that can be glued or nailed down. I have seen even very expensive/professionally installed, floating floors break their seams (move apart). Price is relative, but you get what your pay for. If you put down the cheapest flooring you can buy, you are throwing your money away. I would also suggest that you avoid an aluminum oxide finish. It can ONLY be refinished by a professional, and at a higher cost than a time proven polyurethane finish, which is hard enough for any residential application.
