- Q: I know granite is one, but what other less expensive kinds of tile are durable enough for countertops? Just bought the house so money is tight and granite,or even granite tile, is out of the question.

- depending on the size of your bathroom. dont use them 1x1 tile you spen more time cleaning them things more than when you lay them down. 4x4 tile are mosly common in you average home. mainly on the walls. the flooring would be great with 10 by 10 tile. a dimondblade tile saw will be easier to work with on cutting tile. but i would also go with single tiles. some tiles with the mesh sometime dont stick good specialy natural stone tile with mesh is a nightmare but are pritty nice tiles. according to what i've worked with so far.

- 24 tiles/3 sq ft =8 tiles per square foot. Since 8 is not a square, there is no solution, or the tiles cannot be square.

- I have tiled over formica counters. This is easy. I got a good utility knife and scored the counter all over. Then I got Lock Tite power grab white glue (this is the glue that holds a brick to the ceiling in the commercial) I applied it to the counter with a putty knife in small sections and applied the tile. Mosaics are fun to do. Just smash the tiles with a hammer and sand the edges with a stone sanding block. If you are using different tiles they may be different thicknesses so use the thickest first and add more glue to raise the others to the same height. Now the edge of the table is going to be an issue if you want a finished edge...If the table is square you can have a pretty 1' molding cut and even glue that on. There are some ceramic tiles that are made for edges...so you can use those for the edges after you break them. You are going to have a blast doing this...it's like a puzzle and lots of fun. Enjoy!

- Carpet is better if they fall, but stains easily and shows wear. You can get carpet tiles for the kitchen, that way if there is a spill you only have to pull it up and replace that one.

- You can use a carbide hole cutter in an electric drill. Carbide hole cutters are like ordinary hole saws except the rim is carbide grit instead of teeth. You can get these an several different sizes so you should be able to find one the right size for your purpose. To start the drill, take a nail and hammer a small chip out of the glaze where you want the center of the hole to be, a light tap should do it, this will keep the bit from wandering over the surface and start the hole easier. If it is a wall tile it is probably fairly soft ceramic, not porcelain (which is usually used for floor tile), and it should not be too difficult to drill the hole once you get through the glaze.
