- Q:Tomorrow I will be laying porcelain tile in my kitchen and need help in figuring out how to cut a hole in the tile for the floor vent? Any input would be appreciated.
- I've done this: I've used an angle grinder to cut a rectangle in one bathroom tile. Straight cuts are easy using an angle cutter and a diamond wheel designed for cutting tile. I've even cut a round hole for the commode. But the commode had a tile seam under it, so I wasn't cutting a hole in the middle of a tile, I was able to cut and nibble away until I had a semi-circle in each tile. Just make sure you have more tile than you need. If (when) you make a mistake you have more to work with. And don't try to accomplish the entire cut all at once. Take little passes at it until you work your way through. Hope this helps. 'av'a g'day mate. '')
- Q:I need to repair my shower, about 6 tiles fell off. I‘m currently drying the drywall with a fan. Whats the best way to glue tile back on the wall?
- u get wet setting adhesives use such glue and bond tiles u need not dry the surface at all
- Q:I accidently kicked in one of the tiles near the knobs on the bottom front of the shower. the tile is caved in and loose so i took it out and noticed the blue board behind it. There is a blue board and 6 tiles on the board. the blue board is easily pushed back and has little support. the 6 tiles are loose too and if i press the tile, it will go back a little. I think the blue board provided little support for the tiles and the tile cave in would of happened eventually anyway. either that or it was completely my fault because i caved in one of the tiles which made all of the other tiles loose?? I think the blueboard had little support and it wasn‘t completely my fault. should i fight my landlord on this?i just met with her and sat through a lecture with her accusing me of everything, from having parties trashing the apartment to the slightly black grout near the tub so im kind of worked up over this.
- The tile is installed incorrectly. Water has soaked the blue board and it was a matter of time before theu fell off on their own. Tile should never be installed this way and especially in a well used shower where a lot of use will make it go bad faster. Nothing less than a cement backer board should have been used. - Q:A few tiles in my building flat give a cracking noise when i step on them.Upon inspection i found that the tiles make cracking sound even when i press them with my hands but requires some strength.There is a small airgap in a few joints but the gap is very small.The tiles were installed almost 15 years ago and i dont know how old the building is but is considered an earthquake proof structure.The cracking sound is sometimes even for as long as 1-2 seconds when standing on it.So is it a lose tile or a foundation crack?
- You say the tile floor was installed about 15 years ago, which would make me think that the thin-set mastic used to adhere the tiles to the floor has dried out and allowed several of the tiles to loosen on the mastic bed. This allows them to move, albeit ever so slightly, each time you step on them. If the problem is not resolved soon the cracking sound will increase and there's a good chance the tiles themselves will crack and then need to be completely replaced. This could be sort of difficult seeing as how you'd be attempting to match 15 year old patterns. The repair is to remove the affected tiles, then remove the old thin-set mastic, being careful not to disturb the surrounding tiles, reapply new mastic and then re-set the tiles. Allow them to set overnight, undisturbed and the next day re-grout the cracks. If you don't feel comfortable doing the repairs or if it's not your building, either get your landlord involved or hire a flooring guy yourself.
- Q:Im applying going for a pre apprenticeship next month and I‘m not sure which one to choose from, electrician or wall and floor tiling? I think electrician pays more but you need to be a bit smarter the I am and I‘m afraid I won‘t do well. Or I could just to.. You know tiling not that hard. I‘m from Western Australia if that helps knowing the best jobs for my state. Thank you :)
- Tiling is very hard on your knees and back. I would go for the electrician job. In America heat and air conditioning pays the best by far. Good luck! Let us know what you decide.
- Q:Okay the apartment i live in was built in the 60‘s and unfortunately everything is completely out of date. Trying to get the maintnence people out is more of a hastle than help. So im trying to do this myself. The stuff inbetween the tiles no matter how hard i scrub with scrubbing bubbles and kaboom and everything doesnt come clean this yuckiness is all over lining the tub and all tiles. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this what to use or if i need to regrout how do i do this ? thanks
- Use a real mop, soap and very hot water. Not clean? Repeat the above.
- Q:I‘m in the process of re-tiling my bathroom and when I took the old tiles off some of the old grout stayed on the walls or in some areas messed up the dry wall surface. I‘m looking for recommendations of how to either remove the old grout from the wall, or how to smooth the surface over the area in order to lay the new tiles. Suggestions?
- You need to purchase some grout remover, you can find this at any place that sells tile. Then you need to get a container of drywall patch and spread it on with a puddy knife, then re- sand.
- Q:We recently had new porcelain tile installed on our guest bath floor, and we‘d like to clean it regularly without harming the tiles and grout. The tile installer had no recommendations about this process, nor did the tile company where we made the purchase. Researching this info is very confusing. Some sites recommend using only a wet mop, while others claim that vinegar diluted in water is appropriate; others advise using some type of manufactured cleaning product. We know that regular sweeping is necessary, but we‘re unsure which products to use to protect our new floor. If you suggest a wet mop, please advise which is best: Shark, Eureka, Bissell, etc. Thanks for any detailed advice you can provide.

- Q:HI ,THIS IS MY FIRST TILE PROJECT. I AM INSTALLING A BACKSPLASH ON SHEETROCK USING 4.5X4.5 PORCELAIN TILES. USING OMNIGRIP MASTIC APPLIED WITH A 1/4 X 3/16 V-NOTCH TROWEL. THE TILES HAVE A WAFFLE BACK. MY CONCERN IS DO I HAVE TO FILL IN THE WAFFLE DEPRESSIONS,WHICH SEEM TO BE 1/16 DEEP,BY BACK BUTTERING PRIOR TO APPLYING TILE TO COMBED MASTIC. ALSO, IS THE TROWEL SIZE CORRECT?P.S. WHY DO SOME TILES HAVE A WAFFLED BACK AND SOME A PRACTICALLY FLAT BACK? THANKS!
