- Q: Hi, I might be installing a floating floor that uses plastic connectors to join each plank. They lock together great, however I can still feel the separation between each plank. Can I add clear lacquer to the floor after it is completely installed to give it a uniform feel?
- Lacquer is not a durable finish and shouldn't be used on floors.Poly Urethane is the recommended finish. Having said that, a large number of these types of floors come pre-finished and may even have a PVC embossed coating on them to simulate grain. I would check with the manufacturer to see what they recommend. Some manufacturers will void the warranty if you put another finish over theirs.
- Q: I have tile floors and in the middle of the tile in the living room there was carpet. I had the carpet taken out and laminate floors put in. The trim between the tile and the laminate keeps popping out. When I had the flooring guy come out to fix it for the third time he said it was always going to do that because the wood was thicker (higher) than the tile. Is there something else I can do besides this stupid piece of trim?
- As a flooring installer, I have made transitions from tile to laminate hundreds of times. Your flooring guy is either woefully ignorant or doesn't want to fix your problem properly. If the laminate is thicker than the tile, your tile must be quite thin, possibly on a concrete floor without backerboard? If this is the case the difference in height can easily be accommodated by a simple t-molding that will fit between the tile and wood and bridge one to the other. Wooden t-moldings must be nailed to the floor and if your floor is concrete this will require drilling into the concrete and providing dowels to nail into. However you can also buy a 4-in-1 laminate molding at any home improvement store. This 4-in-1 provides not only a t-molding, but two different kinds of reducer that will help you if the height difference between your floors is more than 1/4. This molding works by screwing a track to the floor and then snapping the molding into it. If you would like more specific help, feel free to e-mail.
- Q: We bought an older home (1965) with hardwood floors. They were good and solid when we moved in, been living here a year, and now they have started swagging in the center of the house. What causes this? I also noticed directly above where the floor swags the nails are popping through from the ceiling. So is it just a floor problem or is the entire house drooping, or settling?
- If you are noticing a definite dip in the flooring and the upper floor is dipping too, I'd make sure there isn't a structural problem. Floors should remain relatively level. That is a lot of settling for a 42 year old house in one year that you've lived there. Call in a profession! Good luck.
- Q: I just bought a house and im tryin to turn the garage into an apartment and the floor has these like little crater things all over the place..I need to know what to use to fill it in so i can put some kind of flooring down.. they told me it was some kind of sealent stuff..
- Most flooring outlets especially ceramic outlets can obtain a floor leveller, it is a quick-drying cement that is used usually used to smooth out dips, slopes and other irregularities in floors before another surface is put on top of it. It can be built up to 1/4. For more money there is a liquid-pour leveller that you pour onto the floor and spread it out over the floor with a large garage squeegee or wiper.
- Q: My parquet floor is expose to water and moisture due to rain water getting on them. Resulting with small 'polka dots' like damage on the surface. Is there any way that I can DIY repair it? Cos getting the professionals are too expensive.
- Parquet floors are easily damaged by exposure to moisture. There is a point where you can't fix them, they have to be replaced. Ask again with pics of the floor for a better answer.
- Q: I recently just got put on a quiet floor (not at my request), and was wondering what the quiet floors at your school were like. For me, the quiet period begins at 7pm and ends at 10 am. What I'm hoping to happen is that the majority of the residents will decide that they don't want it to be a quiet floor. Some extra questions:Were the quiet floors enforced well?Did people on the quiet floor actually want quiet? Was it fun? (probably not)
- My friend was the RA of the quiet floor last year. Trust me, she enforced quiet hours, even when her friends visited her. Her residents had fun though. They weren't drunk and partying at 3 in the morning on the floor. But they still hung out, played video games, talked, went out, etc. If you don't want to live on the quiet floor, see if you can switch to a different floor.
- Q: Floor is in camper trailer
- Squeaks come from something rubbing. Rubbing comes from something moving against something moving less or stationary. Movement can be caused by a lot of things. Does it squeak when you walk on it? Walking puts weight on the floor. Weight can depress the floor, causing movement, causing rubbing, causing squeaking. (I am being very linear right now.) What kind of floor? Wood over a steel frame? Steel on steel? Welded or bolted? To stop the squeaking you can stop the movement by reinforcing the frame and floor so it doesn't flex when you walk on it. Extra cross pieces under the floor may stiffen the floor. Does the frame flex when the trailer is just supported by the axle and trailer tongue? What if you added more support at each corner of the trailer when the trailer is parked? Or you can stop the rubbing by attaching the rubbing parts so they don't move in relation to each other by tightening existing screws or bolts, or by installing additional screws or bolts between the floor and frame. Or you can try to eliminate the rubbing by separating the rubbing parts: neoprene or teflon washers or strips between floor and frame where they touch. You need to look under the trailer when someone is walking inside to see if you can locate the squeak and then observe what is the easiest repair. Thin wood wedges between frame and floor may be a temporary fix. Squeaks can be hard to fix, especially on vehicles that are not entirely rigid. Happy Trails.
- Q: What brands of laminate flooring in the market is durable and good with competitive pricing?
- I think they are called Armstrong. Really good quality, SOOO easy to put in, and lots of choices for colors/textures.
- Q: does anyone know how to stain concrete floors and what products are needed? I am going to remove the carpet from living room, hall way and bedrooms, and I was planning to tile, but that's not in my budget anytime soon, but i'm fed up with the carpet...ideas, suggestions?
- Stain concrete floors is a fair amount of work. If there is any carpet glue or anything you must remove all of that first. Then the floor needs to be prepped so that then stain will adhere. Etching the floor with a solution of acid works but inside you home this may me messy, as it need to be cleaned with water. I would go to a pro paint store for details on how to apply , usually you stain at least once depending on the effect/color you want. Then seal the floor with a clear sealer. With any floor coating you will always have maintenance issues.
- Q: My dog slobbers a lot on the kitchen floor when we are out. We come home to lots of very watery slobber on the floor. Our current linoleum flooring is old and needs replacement. I would like something in style but it needs to withstand the slobber. Thanks for any suggestions.
- A Slip and Slide! ;- Dog slobber is no harder on the flooring than most other kitchens spills and traffic. New vinyl flooring would be a fine choice or you could install a floating laminate floor. Those floors are easy to install and maintain and are comparatively inexpensive. The chief concern for laminate flooring is that spills be wiped up immediately because liquids getting through the seems between boards can damage the floor. But it isn't so sensitive that it can't tolerate typical spills. Dog slobber shouldn't be an issue. Bamboo flooring is popular, tough and environemtally friendly. Bottom line, dog slobber really isn't a factor, choose what ever you like.
