- Q: I would love to have a hardwood floor in my room. My family does not have a lot of money. Does anyone know of a website where I can purchase cheap hardwood flooring material?
- Here's what I did - it's unconventional, but its cheap and has worked great for me. Your floor surface needs to be level and you should have access to a table saw. I bought 4' X 8' sheets of 3/8 oak veneer panels. Laid complete panels on the floor, cut to fit, used liquid nails to glue them to the subfloor and then tiny finishing nails evenly spaced around the edges. Then a couple coats of a light varnish and sealer. It looks great. With an area rug in the center of the room, most people won't even guess that's not a 'real' oak floor. Be a little more careful when moving heavy furniture, etc. on it though. If you gouge it, you'll go right through the veneer pretty easily.
- Q: I have laminated flooring throughout my whole house . I would like to clean it without loosing the shine.
- If you are unable to obtain guidelines from the manufacturer, it is a good idea to try cleaning the floors with an agent that is not loaded with harsh chemicals. Try a simple solution of white vinegar and water, as this will often be enough to clean laminate floors so they look new again. A mild window cleaner is another option. However, before you attempt to clean the whole expanse of the flooring, try these mild cleaning agents on a small section of the laminate surface. This will help you to identify if the cleaner is going to fade or otherwise damage the surface of the flooring. There will be situations where you must scrub the surface of your laminate flooring. You can use a sponge or soft brush for this purpose. Keep in mind that abrasive items such as scouring pads or stiff brushes will damage the surface. Rest assured that the soft bristle brush or the soft sponge will work the cleaning agent into any tiny indentations and remove any grime present. If you do not have a sponge or soft brush present, you can use an old washcloth to clean laminate floors. After you clean laminate floors around your home, make sure to go back and remove any excess liquid that may be on the surface of the flooring. Standing liquid will damage the floor over time. Use a dry mop or clean towel to remove any excess liquid. Your floor will dry quickly and also look great.
- Q: Is it okay to wax vinyl floors? Does it help extend th elife of the floors or does it hurt them?
- I believe manufacturer's tell you NOT to wax vinyl floors. I have had experience moving into rentals where the previous renters used a product like Mop n Glo, what a mess, they end up waxing and re-waxing and the product doesn't really clean the floor, so you end up with layers of dirt and wax! If at all possible, I would suggest not waxing!
- Q: Can anyone explain me the basics of under floor heating for residences in european countries.?
- I have not dealt specifically with european countries, but in general underfloor heating can be accomplished in two ways: - build a raised floor forced air system (expensive and impractical on a residential level) - construct piping under the floor to provide heat Under floor piping can be built into a cement floor or can be attached underneath a wooden floor. The piping is usually copper or plastic tubing and is usually piped back to a manifold system. This manifold can be zoned so that different areas that require different amounts of heat can be controlled separately.
- Q: I ate a cookie of the floor yesterday. It was on the floor for about 1 min. Will i die! i'm kind of a germ freak and i'm worried!~riley!
- Probably not much. My dog does it all the time. Humans have lots of resistance in them, and since it has been a day, I say you will be fine (except for the weight you gained eating that extra cookie!)
- Q: could u build a stair case on top of the floor without messing the floor up?

- Q: Can anybody describe what is exactly happen or how is it commence of the floor drift during earthquake/seismic/wind effect to a building?is there any animation that i can see from any websites?what does it mean of drift value of 4%? how does it calculate this?last question, what is the definition of cyclic load? can u giv some example?
- Floor drift is movement of the floor system within tolerance by loads which occur randomly. A cyclic load is a repeating force on a body, such as the loads produced by the rotation of a turbine assembly .
- Q: I'm going to be installing laminate flooring in a house that has had the carpet and old tiling torn out. The floor is currently bare smooth concrete. The house is not over 20 years old so everything is in good (non-leaking) condition. The only thing on the floor is some of the residual carpet glue and some screw holes from the thresholds. Will i need a vapor barrier? If so, what kind? will i need to seal the concrete floor with something? What is the best kind of saw to use to cut laminate flooring when detail work needs done as well? Thank you for your answers!
- You can install the flooring over the concrete easily. It is known as a floating floor. Make sure you check the manufacturer's instructions though because they may require specifics to maintain the manufacturer warranty on the product. (i.e. gluing down may void warranty). If the manufacturer does not provide instructions, or you cannot find them, you can reference another manufacturer to determine best methods. I have linked the Pergo install guide page below. The residual glue on your concrete may pose some problems but the underlayment you put down under the flooring assists in overcoming this. You need to have an underlayment though. 1st thing I would suggest is testing the concrete floor for moisture content. Anything over 4-5% will possibly create problems. Adding a 6mil (min.) vapor barrier is preferred over concrete with overlapping seams. After testing the concrete, make sure to remove any large areas of glue that stick up. While you don't need to remove it all, the floor level should be free from anything sticking up more than 1/16 Installing new laminate flooring as a floating floor is a preferred method as it will help allow for expansion and contraction of the wood during cold/warm temperatures. You need to therefore also leave a gap around the perimeter of the room and islands. As for saws... The preferred saw I have used (and seen used) for laminate flooring is a radial arm saw (10 blade). For ripping down boards lengthwise, you pretty much need a table saw to do it properly. However, without these 2 specialty tools, you can use a hand held circular saw for most all boardccuts assuming you can consistently keep cuts straight. A jigsaw will help with small cuts around obstacles and door frames but a coping saw could be subbed (again assuming cuts will be straight) Lastly, to undercut door frames, you need a straight hand saw or on of the newer oscillating flush cut tools. Hand saw is cheap but hard to use. Oscillating tool is easy but runs about $100.
- Q: Would a comparable condo on the top floor in the case third floor be worth more than a ground level condo?
- It depends on the square footage, the outdoor space, availability of parking stalls with that unit etc. Where I live, each floor up is worth at least $2000 in actual value. But prices vary based on features/amenities etc as I said in the first sentence. I've seen ground floor units sell for more than 2nd or 3rd floor units (in a building with an elevator) because it had patio space while the units on the higher floors had no outdoor space whatsoever.
