- Q: I think the thinset under some of my ceramic tiles is crumbling. I have a concrete slab floor and it involves about 12 tiles between my kitchen and dining room. The grout and tiles have not cracked yet, but how would I fix the thinset without breaking up the good tiles?
- Tedr is right.. W/O seeing it its hard to tell.. Get down on your hands and knees and rap on it w/ your knuckles.. If it sounds hollow and then solid on another part that isn t making sounds then more than likely it s loose tile and just the gout and pressure is holding it together..Seen it many times.. Trdr has many of causes right too.. But its hard to say just what it is GL
- Q: i have a tile back splash that runs all along my counter including behind my sink and behind my stove. it is a small 1 tile, and i‘m pretty sure it‘s original to the house (40‘s) so it‘s getting kinda grimy. no matter what i do to clean it, it‘s so tough, because of kitchen grease and splatter. the grout isn‘t sealed so it absorbs stains. i keep seeing people say sprinkle baking soda on tile, let it sit, and then clean with vinegar, which would be great if this was a floor, but its a wall, so if there are any solutions, that would be great. natural preferred. i really don‘t want to replace this. painting it is an option, so suggestions on paint for tile would be appreciated as well.
- Is it practical to remove some of the grout,apply new grout and apply a sealant before using the area? The other suggestions given may clean the grout ,but the problem will keep recurring.
- Q: I am tiling a bathroom, and have found a deal on 4 tiles. However, I am no expert when it comes to calculating, and am having difficulty determining how many tiles I should buy. I don‘t want to buy much too many, or even much worse, not buy enough.I am planning to do 3 different areas in the bathroom. I have included the measurements, in inches, of each area. Can you help me out?
- 35/4 = 8.75 Since you really can't buy 0.75 tiles, round it up 9 80/4 = 20 72/4 = 18 9 * 20 + 9 * 20 + 18 * 20 => 180 + 180 + 360 => 720 38/4 = 9.5 => 10 39/4 = 9.75 => 10 22/4 = 5.5 => 6 21/4 = 5.25 => 6 10 * 10 + 6 * 10 + 6 * 10 => 100 + 60 + 60 => 220 79/4 = 19.75 => 20 27/4 = 6.75 => 7 20 * 7 = 140 720 + 220 + 140 => 840 + 140 => 980 At the minimum, you'll need to buy around 980 tiles. Now, it should be noted that there will be spaces between the tiles (anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4, so this will cut down on the number of tiles), and also, you may be able to use pieces of tiles that are left over (for instance, when you cut a quarter of a piece of the tile away, you'll still have a lot left over to work with). I'd go ahead and purchase an even 1000 (you will break some, and there's always bound to be at least 1 tile that's busted up in each pack) so you'd have plenty to work with.

- Q: My bf and I are removing the tiles from the bathroom wall with a chisel and hammer; however, we live in an apartment building, so I was wondering if there‘s an easier way to remove the tiles by softening the grout around them.
- No there isn't any way to soften the grout or thin-set. You just have to pry/bang them or smash the hole wall with a sledge hammer.
- Q: I‘m thinking about most economical way to up grade my living and master bedroom flooring.both had laminate and had flood slab leak due to underground water pipe damage. now the pluming has fixed and everything has been taken care of. the rest of the house already got white tiles throughout. I can go laminate in the living room and tile in the bedroom. both rooms are about 280 sq.ft. or I can do the need room laminate again. I don‘t know how to put the flooring, so I would Gabe to hire someone to do it. we have a Lowes home center where their contractor can come out and to the installation. they want $35 for an estimate. we also have a floor center just down the street from us. their material was little more expensive than the Lowes price but perhaps the installation may be cheaper... I‘m not sure. would tile thought the house including the bedroom better, cheaper than laminate in the bedroom? I know I would want laminate in the living room hopefully nothing gets wet.
- Laminate as in hardwood laminate? Or tile laminate? We have had both. Hardwood laminate is wonderful, as long as you have no source of fluid sitting for long terms. We had a diabetic dog and the last months he was a live had accidents all the time. I would get home from work and then find a puddle of pee. Eventually it started to bubble underneath. We just replaced with real tile. Tile is extremely easy to care for. And really isn't hard to install. It's pretty cheap also.
- Q: I would like to remove some tiles from one area of my kitchen and save as many as possible for use in another area of the kitchen. They are heavy 1979 ceramic tiles. How do I get them up and save some of them?
- Having recently removed a s***load of tile during a kitchen remodel, I wish you luck in saving a whole lot of them! Carefully slide a prybar under the edge of the tile---wiggle til it loosens then use the prybar as a lever to remove the tile. It worked for me. Surprisingly many remained whole without chips or cracks, and I wasn't trying to save them. Just didn't want the huge mess involved in the sledgehammer method. LOL
- Q: My wall tiles has been for more than 20yrs owned by first owner. Due to limited budget,i have not replaced them when i bought over as 2nd owner, but have done a coat of spray paint on it thru contractor, Now after 5 yrs, some of these spray paint are coming off, any suggestion what i can do , i do not want to hack the wall and replace new wall tiles very costly, someone suggest buying bathroom tiles stickers on those tiles with paint coming off.. anyone with better suggestion on DIY ..plse help---
- Just repaint, or color match the existing paint and touch up the bad areas.
- Q: My kitchen is 15x11 and I am buying 18x18 tiles I need to know how many to buy.
- Rob S has the only correct answer. My only additional comment is that you should allow for more waste. I would order 90 tiles.
- Q: I am replacing the tile in my kitchen and having trouble getting the old tile up. The tiles are 12 inch squres, I‘m not sure what they are made of, something like linoleum I think. When it was installed it had pre-glued backing and I would like to know the easiest way to remove it. THANKS
- 3/4 outdoors grade plywood, with a million/4 Hardibacker on the floor joist would desire to offer you the capability you like. in no way use luan in any tile application. there is likewise a product on the marketplace called Dietra-mat, so when you scrape the floor down, you may place dietra-mat, after which tile to that. the thought is Dietra mat absorbs the stream so as that the tile won't crack. Dietra mat is made via Schluter and you will desire to inspect their internet site for product information.
