- Q: I am installing tile in a bathroom, hall, dinining room, and kitchen, and they all connect. Where should I center the tiles?
- I normally break the areas up and snap chalk lines as if I was going to do each one seperately. Then start adjusting to find the best method of combining them(I have numerous chalk lines of different colors). Then I get real good tiling guys to make me look good. Good Luck

- My sister has 20 by 20 in her kitchen and it looks very good. Darker grout doesn't look like it gets as dirty as lighter grout. I know you didn't ask that but I thought that might be why you don't like grout. You can get textured tile or non slip tile.

- I think you're correct about your comment with respect to wet, high traffic areas. I don't thinks self stick is a good idea in a bathroom or a kitchen. I have had success with a better quality vinyl, they are much easier to work with than cheap stuff while still being inexpensive. I also recommend laminate flooring, it installs easily with minor trimming around corners, edges etc. but I've done 2 kitchens in the past year for friends the project only take a day and they love it.
- Q: We have cement tiles in our apartment. To wash them, I just use liquid soap and water; I don‘t want to use toxic products. The tiles are dull-looking, though. How do I get them to shine?
- At your local home improvement store they have a sealant that will bring shine to cement tiles. They have to be cleaned real good and then you put this over the tiles. Just ask an associate, and they will point you in the right direction. :-)

- Anything that is real ceramic tile is good. Think about texture, cleaning and what the room is used for when choosing. It usually runs from $1 to $8 a square foot depending on which you choose. If you are planning to do it yourself you will need the proper tools such as a tile cutter, grout, and a base flooring etc. This will cost you up to $300 for everything but would save lots of money on labor etc. Don't buy the cheapest tile cutter! This is one of those things that you get what you pay for. Hope this helps.
- Q: I was wondering about space between tile when laying tile floor. I have seen online and in person tile floors(don‘t know marble or porcelain or what) where it is completely flat and smooth and the tiles appear butted together. I prefer this look as opposed to the typical tile floor with grout lines that are shallower than the tops of the tile. I was wondering how to get this flat look when every where I have read online says you cannot or at least should not butt tiles together. I hope I described what im looking for accurately and am hoping to get some options. Again I am looking for a flat smooth surface nothing with the dips or recesses of the grout lines. how is that done??
- What you want all depends on the type of tile you choose. Granites and marbles you can do this with.There are some vitrified tiles that this can be done with. These are cut (the 2 stones) this way to butt them almost all the way together.Vitrified tiles are formed with the edges slanted so you butt them together.. These are all made to use a very small grout joint but you still need to have grout. Most all other ceramic and porcelain tiles you need a slightly bigger joint and only as small as 3/16 .The type of grout these require you can only do a joint that small. - Q: Yesterday I bought tile from menards and they are sticky on the backs of them, my question is do I need to use other glue as well? If so what kind of glue?
- These tiles are self sttick, so no other glue is needed. However, the surface of the floor must be clean, dry, and smooth for the tile job to last. Be sure to follow installation instructions carefully. Personally, anywhere water is involved, (bath, kitchen, laundry,) the less joints that water can penetrate, is the better solution. Self stick tiles will no hold up to an overflowing sink or toilet.
- Q: im going to tile the floor next weekend with 16x16 ceramic tile, and i could use some advice2 questions actually...1. when i lay my backerboard, and tape the staggered seams, do i keep that thinset over the tape very thin? im afraid of a hump in the floor when i go to lay tile.2. how much pressure do i apply when seting the tiles in the thinset? ive seen websites that show very little pressure..and some that show alot of pressure. does it need to float on the thinset or mash it down in the thinset. i just want this to turn out good...its my 1st time, and ive done alot of research, but the information varies from person to person. any added advice or tips on this project would be greatly appreciated.
- much like drywall the long edges of durarock are beveled.after applying the tape the thin set will fill the natural void bringing it to flush or level.as for the but edges I personally fill any voids if there are any.as to the pressure some installers use a rubber mallet and tap on 4 corners and center.hand pressure is acceptable.you want to set!!! the tile into the mud bed not merely lay it on top of your mortar.
