If your spending $750 on a computer i'd suggest you get a branded power supply, they last longer and will supply your video card with enough juice to get the job done. what kind of video card are you getting? depending on what card your getting 500 watts may or may not be enough, as the new nvidia cards are very juicy :)

- It's a regular USB 2 cable. No idea what sort of power it takes. Can't be a very special power though. Your best bet is to get one of those switchable supplies from Radio Shack and try the voltage one at a time until the drive works. - You can but I wouldn't I build PCs all the time in test configurations outside of the case, but I always have everythign on non conductive serfaces, ie wooden tables. Carpet would be a little to staticy for me. Your second scenario leaves two answers for me, both are no, but for different reasons. If I plug a psu into a motherboard with power allready in it, I could short out the motherboard or worse yet shock myself. Also, I don't want to plug a power cable into a psu without any load on the device, doing so can and will fry the psu. depends on the liquid, if it is dionized water, you can turn the pc off dry it out and may be lucky enough not to fry your system. if it is soda,tap water, or salt water of any kind, don't touch it. I don't care if you THINK you are grounded, even if you were, the current would still flow through you, and if you pulled away, out of sudden suprise, then you would get electricuted, not good. Unbluggin the power cord from the powersupply will not be the biggest problem, unless you have very sweaty hands and the air is very dry. Just don't play with electricity
- Q: He has made a couple of really small slits in the black plastic on the wire, all in the same place, but on both sides. I can see silver through it, but no other colours. - Good question, however I don't think there is a way at this time. I am a Computer Engineer and coming from an electrical point of view it would be very difficult for the USB cable to send enough power to the battery to be able to charge it significantly. You have to understand that the laptop battery is very large and has to be significantly more powerful than a battery like say the iPod that can be charged via USB. Power consumption and load means the world to batteries. A load like a laptop would use on a USB cable would fry the cable in my opinion. Take care, Chad
