The easiest fix, which may or may not be the source of the problem. Is remove the elbow pipe. If you look under your sink there will be a straight pipe going down, then a U or sometimes referred to as J shape that then goes sideways. The U is the elbow. Loosen the two clamps, take it out, clean it. Put it back together the same way you took it apart (really simple). If the clog is not in there. You may have to go buy a pipe snake at the hardware store and snake the drain.

Get a bucket place it under the P trap under the sink. Remove the compression nut on the trap and loosen the one holding the pipe in place at the wall. Drain the trap and if the line is full let it back drain into the bucket dump it in the toilet instaed of the the tub. Why the toilet ? It handles aoil and paper on a regular basis, the tub doesn't. There fore the tub drain is prone to clogging just as bad as the sink., Clean the trap out with hot water and scrub it out with a flexible brush. Run a sink tape down the drain and give it a few hardy turns and work it in and out of the drain pipe. This will dislodge most clogs and then just reassemble and flush the sink with Hot water.

Is this a pedestal sink, a drop in sink, or a molded sink? Make sure you have the shut off valves in the off position (top of valve to the right or clockwise to shut off). If your home is an older home and does not have shut off valves (requiring you to shut off water to the entire house or section of home) then by all means install shut off valves before you attempt to install a new sink. You may not need a new faucet, but for the cost of a new one vs replacing your old one I would recommend a new faucet and drain setup. I prefer the white Silicone (plumbers) tape to the goop. For the drain get plumbers putty even if the directions say you can use the gasket paper or cardboard gasket that comes with the new drain. Dry fit everything before you permanently install it especially the PVC or metal drain parts. It is much easier to install the faucet before you drop in the sink or place the modeled counter top sink in place. There are special considerations for a pedestal sink.
