Q: My bathroom sink has been clogged for a while, so I tried to use a wire hanger to unclog it. Mistake. It got stuck. I managed to get it out after a bit, but now it's completely clogged with this black stuff. It doesn't smell and is squishy. What is it? Remove the compression nut on the trap and loosen the one holding the pipe in place at the wall. Drain the trap and if the line is full let it back drain into the bucket dump it in the toilet instaed of the the tub. Why the toilet ? It handles aoil and paper on a regular basis, the tub doesn't. There fore the tub drain is prone to clogging just as bad as the sink., Clean the trap out with hot water and scrub it out with a flexible brush. Run a sink tape down the drain and give it a few hardy turns and work it in and out of the drain pipe. This will dislodge most clogs and then just reassemble and flush the sink with Hot water.

Q: bathroom sink?: Many moons ago, this was called an S trap; today, it's called a P trap, not because it traps pee, but, presumably, because it's P-shaped. Anywho, if plumbing went straight to the sewer with nothing in between, you would be forced to endure the entrance of sewer gases from the sewer--smelly and dangerous. So there is the trap under the sink, where a small amount of water stays trapped in the bend of the pipe, and acts as a barrier between the sewer gases and the air from the trapped water to the pipe going toward the sink. Though it can be a nuisance, it is also nice to be able to retrieve a fallen ring by just removing the trap. So you absolutely need this piece of plumbing.

Thank you.: That is really easy to fix. All you need is a wrench or locking wrench to loosen the bolts on either side there enough to twist the rest of the way off. Pull off the pea trap and take to your local hardware or lowes/home depot for sizing. Don't forget to get some plumbers tape or you'll be wondering why it still leaks after you replace it.

Q: It is a bathroom sink: All so far are valid answers. I replaced mine with standards from a Big Box Home Imp. store. The issue is to measure the cut out on the counter top, assure that the sink has a lip to cover, perhaps 1/2 inch all around to cover the cut, caulk before setting the new sink,,,After assurance that the plumbing lines up beneath, use the brackets from beneath, that pull the sink tight to the counter top, If they are offered, hook up the down drain pipe to the P Trap, and the intake lines to the faucet, and turn it on,,,slowly at first to determine proper connections. Trailers per say,,,as in tow arounds, often have specifically sized fixturing. Mobile Homes which are not strictly Mobile, can accept regular house fixturing. Most bath sinks are between 19 and 22 inches, oval, round, or otherwise, and all that's best required is pulling the old sink and measuring the opening before you shop. Steven Wolf

Q: So I have a family of cats. We found a pregnant cat 2 years ago, and she had 3 boys, so we have mommy and her boys. We also have a foster cat for a local shelter. Our litter boxes are located in our master closet, which is attached to our master bath. Fluff, her youngest son, has decided to start peeing in the sink. But ONLY after I've emptied the litter box. It's always the same sink, there's no blood in his urine, and he doesn't strain to urinate, or show any other signs of a UTI. Is he just pissed off because of all the cats? This is only a recent problem, but we've had plenty of other foster cats, and they've always gotten along. Its the only other thing I could think of. He was neutered at 6 months old too. (he's now 2): Well, Is isn't your kitchen sink, which would be much worse. Our cat will pee over the shower outlet or the bath. Maybe it is just me but I don't have a problem with that. I just clean them after. It is more hygenic than the stink of a litter box. Or peeing on the carpet etc.
