Hi most guys who know about such things will tell you a wheel spacer puts unrealistic strain on the suspension. so there is a chance of the suspension failing. as mention by thebax20 he knows exactly what extra tension it puts on wheel studs which hold the wheels on my stupid brother did exactly this and when one his rear wheels overtook him going down the hill and a grinding noise from the rear of the car it became obvious that wheel had fallen off as the rear wheel studs had snapped off.

it depends on the kind, mountain bike wheels and bmx wheels come in different amounts of spokes, the more there are generally the stronger it is. Bmx are generally stronger however because the smaller diameter makes them harder to bend/put out of true

My question is: How do I get to the bearings. I get the wheel off, the calipers, and the rotor off but then what do I do to get to the spindel?

well it sounds like you have a non strut type front end. One bearing should have come off with the rotor and the other is in the back of the rotor under the seal. If you have a strut, there will be a knuckle that the strut bolts to. The bearing will bolt to the knuckle and you will have to remove the axle nut in the center. Might have to remove the knuckle and strut together at get to the bearing. Dont take the strut to knuckle bolts out as you will have to realign you front end (camber).
